Thank you. Can you recommend any specific pieces, or anyone else? THere's bound to be more than one out there, despite what some musicians say!

jayemsea,

A composer who regularly gets his works performed by the Honolulu Symphony is Dr. Donald Reid Womack - Very interesting stuff.

Cheers,

Greetings,

As well as the other composers mentioned,
I recommend orchestral works by the French composer Henri Dutilliuex, especially his work l'Arbre des Songes for Violin and Orchestra. It’s a personal favorite of mine. As well, I recommend works by Toru Takemitsu, Valentin Silvestrov, Michael Tippett, and Oliver Knussen.

Thank you!
I have been looking for some new music to listen to for some time now, having a list like this to walk into the music store with is fantastic.
I just hope I can find some of these..

Cherry,

You're quite welcome.

Cd's of some of these composers may not be very easy to find. The easiest to find will should be Corigliano, Rorem, and Floyd. Rorem and Floyd, as well as Hoiby, write mainly vocal pieces/operas, though they do have some well known orchestral pieces as well. Because these composers are still living, you might check their websites to get a better idea of their style and record labels. Many are available on Amazon.com and you can hear audio samples from their CD's.

Good luck and happy listening!

Chris

I had a feeling they would be hard to find, and on searching, I agree.
Not much on Amazon thats for sure!
I have a good local store that can track hard-to-find stuff down, I plan to try there.
