Hi there,

Could someone please tell me who is believed to have written more music than any composer in the history of music--over 3,000 known works? Your help is much appreciated.

Thanks much,

Erin

Is this another homework assignment?

Georg Philipp Telemann is, to my knowledge, the most prolific composer known, even listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. But it's nowhere near 3000 works...

A quote from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georg_Philipp_Telemann :

The Guinness Book of World Records lists Telemann as the most prolific composer of all time with more than 800 credited works. Put in other terms, it has been estimated that Telemann wrote more notes than Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Frideric Handel combined!

The fact that Telemann was so prolific is more than a piece of trivia. It has both hurt and helped his reputation. After his death, Telemann soon fell into oblivion, in part because it was thought: how could he be any good if he wrote so much? However, in the 20th century there has been a general rebirth of interest in Baroque music and Telemann's great output has undoubtedly contributed to a remarkable Telemann renaissance.
