the beginners guide to... Heavy Metal

I want to start a thread which all of you can react to, to make some sort of introductory top-ten to heavy metal. I suggest that everybody interested names some Heavy albums which they feel must be included in a list for new listeners of the genre.

Note that the list is not ranked.

I would suggest myself, that following albums should be included:

Seppultura - Chaos AD
Metallica - Master of Puppets
Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power

These albums were big around the early 90's and represent my introduction to the genre. They are very mainstream but nevertheless a must-listen according to me

cannibal corpse - tomb of the mutilated
3 inches of blood - advance and vanquish
entombed - wolverine blues
paradise lost - embers fire

Slayer - Reign in Blood (1986)
Slayer - Season in the Abyss (1990)
Pantera - For a good introduction to metal, you should listen to all of their albums (except Reinventing the Steel).

Good grief. Introductory should give some history to the greatest bands of the genre. It probably means that they will be commercially successful. This means going back to the beginning and working forward, so first the original Gods:

Deep Purple in Rock
Led Zepellin IV
Black Sabbath - Paranoid

Then the rebirth and the New Wave:

Judas Priest - Stained Class
Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast
Saxon - Wheels of Steel
Motorhead - Motorhead
Ian Gillan Band - Mr Universe

All of these were originally must-haves and would give an insight into the more modern albums above. If you want to get down and dirty with really old stuff then check out the MC5 and Blue Cheer.

Maiden- Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son
Judas Priest- Ram It Down
Ozzy Osbourne- Anything!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think all of my suggestions would be Deep Purple! Especially "Smoke on the Water" and "Black Night". I would also add in Motorhead - "The Ace of Spades"

Doesn't anybody remember Samson? They were the hard-rocking British Heavy Metal band of the 80's with a two syllable name beginning with 'Sa' and ending with 'on' that were not Saxon.

Hello. Pompey. Yes i can remember Samson. Infact,i have quite a few albums of theirs, too boot, but as i said, i could list many more bands. Those were just a few that sprang to mind.

I don't really have a top 10 list, but if I were gonna to an into guide to heavy metal, I would start off with some of the first metal bands around, such as Black Sabbath and Zeppelin. Many of their songs are just part of pop culture now, and I think it would be a great place to start. You could introduce them to some of the great metal 'classics' as well. I've always loved Sabbath's 'War Pigs'. From there, I'd move on into the 80's hair bands and introduce them to the early, genius, uncommercial songs of such groups like Metallica.

Metal.......hmmm..

The main difference in opinions seems to be the age of the poster,each seeing the importance of their own generation of metal.Nowadays bands like Deep Purple are just heavy rock....once again no particular order...

Almost anything by the above bands will give a fairly wide mix of sounds and history from raw to prog polished.Again the list could be thousands long,just listing the genre and subgenre.As wide and varied as any type of music.
