Arts council wasting public funds?

Cheer up, Mike... Britain is not quite daft as a brush as Sweden is...Yet...The Cultural Elite Talibans want to force down every Swede's throat the concept of "Hen". Instead of He/She, the schools will indoctrinate kids that gender is a social construct, and that the genus-neutral "Hen" when used by everyone will cause the totally equalitarian/egalitarian society to come into bloom. Although, I am surprised that the British Govt. will make it perfectly legal to fire someone for wearing a Cross visibly. Many Russians are shocked that the Parliament and 10 Downing Street will support this latest nonsense.

Back on Topic: Yes, the Arts Councils leave a lot to be desired for in re to intellectual capital, or lack thereof.............

In my opinion Stockhausen didn't write music or at least nothing that meets my definition of music. And no, I have more consideration for my ears than to attempt to listen to any of his cacophonies.

I am with Mike - Stockhausen, imo, showed just how far one could take music that is dis-connected from:

1. Cultural Patrimony i.e. Faith System. JSBach wrote on his manuscripts SDGL(Soli Deo Gloria)(To the Glory of God) and (JJ)(Jesu Juva)(Jesus my Joy). Charles Tournemire, one of the most important composers of organ music after JSBach wrote: "Music that does not glorify God is absolutely worthless.

2. Folk Melodies. Georgii Sviridov understood, after he had composed much atonal music, that people innately connect with Folk Tunes. Therefore, his music later on was structured like that of Folk Tunes - simple melodic and harmonic lines. Shostakovich wrote of his disciple Sviridov: "Few notes, but much music".

Finally: Maybe Stockhausen would have done better if he stuck to writing improvisations based on standard tunes of the 20th Century i.e. "Autumn Leaves", "Stompin' at the Savoy" and countless other memorable themes.............

Comrade, I take it he is not on you list of great composers

Kommisar JHC,

On what list? Nyet! Of course, one of our members named "someguy" probably has come down with a severe case of "dyspepsia" upon reading my rant about Stockhausen. For sure, one man's Stockhausen is another man's "whatever"........Yes, some find Stockhausen, Cage, and Xenakis music as a soothing bromide for the tortured soul. And I happen to like Sorabji, Finissy, and Stevenson - For some, those just aforementioned composers are synonymous with music to be played in a torture dungeon!

Sorry but he is not for me, I can think of better things to do. That is just my opinion though.

Have they nothing better to spend their money on?

I only asked, :cry::cry::cry:

Br. Colin,

Please, I am no arbiter of whose music is to be listened to or not - Please, don't be crest-fallen about my trashing Stockhausen - Some have trashed Sorabji - I'm no worse for it.

Comrade, I just fail to understand how anyone can not adore the beautiful music of Stockhausen the close harmony and lyrical melodies that flow from his pen not to mention the wonderful structure that he uses I bet if LvB or WAM were alive to day they would be in raptures, it is so soothing and calms the troubled breast at days end ah what bliss :shake:

Br. Colin,

If Stockhausen's music moves you then yes, listen to it. You have your convictions which you should follow, regardless of what any street-sweeper or Ph.D tells you. Imho, putting Stockhausen up along with LvB and WAM leaves me perplexed, especially since Shostakovich is regarded by the Classical Music Community as the 20th century LvB. So, lets get on with the party and be of good cheer.

Faithfully yours.............

Methinks that if Colin's tongue were any further into his cheek it would be sticking out of his ear.

Bliss must be a typo, he mis-hit a b along with the space bar and then hit the l instead of the p.

Must admit Stockhausen moves me, straight to the big white porcelain telephone (funny thing is tho' Hughie never answers does he?)

You mean Sir Arthur Bliss? Whom Sorabji "christened" Sir Arthur Piss? Great white porcelain telephone - Oooh, Mike - That had me ROTFLOL.

"Victorian Trash" - Thats the category of Sir Arthur Piss...erm...excuse me...Bliss...

In re to Colin's tongue-in-cheek: Most likely........

Back on topic: When an arts council needs to "exhibit" a Crucifix standing in a bottle of Urine then they have lost all credibility.

Would they ever dare to stick the Koran in a pile of human poo? Don't bet on it!

Comrade you have my answer in my reply to Mike I really thought you would have caught onto my sense of humour by now.Your remark about Shosty being to days LvB is very interesting as I have long held that view but you are the first person that I know of to put that in print so to speak.

Commisar Colin,

In re to my catching on to your humour - Alas, my mind is becoming more and more entrenched and enfeebled - Many a wry and subtle humour passes over my head without my ever understanding the punch line - Woe is me, a mind is a terrible thing to have gone to pots.............
