    Jazz Piano Through The Years

Inspired by Mike's big band thread and John's trombone thread, I present you one devoted to jazz piano.

There will be a lot of copy and paste method in this thread.

    To start it off:

When speaking about the history of jazz piano we should remember that the piano is a unique instrument. It can play melody, harmony and bass. That's why it can function as an accompanying and as a lead instrument. Accept from that it is a magnificent solo instrument.

If that's not enough we can see that as the history of jazz piano music developed, the rhythm possibilities improved enormously and made this instrument sound like a full orchestra.

If it took hundred year or more for a big change in the classical music, here in the history of jazz piano music we will notice that changes has occurred rapidly, and after ten years or so a new style of jazz has developed.

Where is the turning point from what we define as classical piano music and jazz piano music? Well, the major elements in jazz music are the swingin' rhythm, the improvisation and the blue notes that were introduced to the traditional harmony.

The beginning of these elements started with Ragtime.
So, lets begin with a couple of recordings.

This thread is based mostly on info found here:

Hey, I've been waiting for someone to add more vids to this thread. So, as long as they fit the current style, it's all good.

That's more like it, guys. Keep them coming, and we'll switch to the next style in a while.
