Hello everyone.

My name's Ted, I play saxophone. I'm a college student majoring in music, so this forum seemed like a good idea to join. Right now I'm teaching myself guitar and my schools teaching me piano. I'm really into jazz and ska, and always looking to broaden my horizons so any listening suggestions are appreciated. That's about it, I guess.

I'm from Portland, OR, and I like just about any kind of jazz. I've been transcribing a lot of Hank Mobley and Dexter Gordon lately, so that's what I'm into now, but I'll listen to anything from Count Basie to Maria Schneider. I'm a sucker for dixieland, though.

If I can emphasize one thing for a beginning musician, it's listening.
Sure, it's easy to take listening for granted, even just thinking my ears still work.
But what you listen to is who you are as much as what you say and what you eat.
Sheryl Crow sang about "derailing your own train with Coltrane", and she's right.
Depending on the kind of person you are, and the kind of musician you want to see,
your listening should be a careful experience,
because it might take you to places you might not want to be.
