Ok then musicteach - can you play the double bass tuned in fifths? I do...After having some fruitful exchanges with Joel Quarrington and alot of "woodshedding" on my part...What make of "DB" do you have? I have a Poellmann 5-string and a 5-string by Dan Hachez. And I do like to play the Cello suites of JSBach on the DB. When I heard Gary Carr play the suites on the DB - WOW! What an inspiration...Then I was hooked. I am also the proud owner of a Contrabass Trombone made by Thein in Bremen. I also used to have a Rudy Meinl 6/4 Kaisertuba and used it many years in different ensembles. I have some other instruments which come out every now and then.......

Nah, can't do that. And sadly, I don't own a double bass. Tuba, yes. I just play the school's, since I rarely get a student that plays DB. Only instruments I own are a Yamaha Bb Trumpet, Conn C tuba, Conn Bb Tuba, Josef Lazar Cello, and a very old french horn which didn't have a manufacturer on it. See I found it at a pawn shop, and the information had long since rubbed off.

Awesome! Do you use a French or German bow grip? Or do you play in the styles that don't use a bow usually?
I used a French bow it was the only one I ever had, I played in Jazz ens from trio to a seven line up plus Dance Bands and a couple of local amateur orchestras and once in a Pit Orch at the local theatre which was a disaster. I brought my bass over to New Zealand as Cabin luggage but there was very little work in Auckland at that time so I just had to say good by to the old chap a bad decision in retrospect.

Honestly I wish I owned my own double bass. It's just that I don't have a couple thousand dollars laying around to buy one from a music store. I'm literally searching high and low in pawn shops, flea markets, and even ebay and Craigslist for someone selling one fairly cheap and in good condition. I have two kids in college right now, another starting her junior year of high school this year and a fourth who'll be there before I know it. As any parent knows, their education comes first. But I tell ya what, if I can find one cheap but in good condition...I'll jump on it.

Surely that would ruin it

There's lot of symphonies and junior symphonies around here,
and I've been looking for a busted up double bass for a long time,
so I can make a stand-up electric with the neck so a bassist can hump-back me up on bass,
getting into marine mammal frequencies with my newly invented semi-solid-body electric guitar.
But alas, not one is to be found, even if a lass could back me up too.
