Hi there! So a little bit about myself, firstly as my username indicates, I'm a high school music teacher. I teach at a fairly large Regional HS in North Carolina, in the United States. As it goes for teaching, I've been teaching for 20 years, 10 of which at my current HS. I did four years of high school marching/concert band, and choir when I was in HS, four years of college marching/concert band, choir, and several smaller groups. 5 seasons of drum corps in the US. While I was earning my degree to teach music, I was serving in the United States Army, and served two years after graduating college. Would of served three more years, but was discharged on a medical. After the military, I taught in London, England for five years, while also playing with the London Symphony Orchestra. Which is where I met my wife. We moved back when my oldest sons were born. Taught at a middle school for five years before coming to my current HS. My main instruments are tuba and double bass. That's about it, I may be a bit grumpy at times, but am always up to a decent conversation!

Thanks ^^ I should note for anyone who cares, I keep strange hours--especially during the summer--but mainly because I can very rarely sleep though the night fully. My leg goes to hurting and I wonder to the living room and mess around on the computer...usually arranging music for my students.

Welcome to the club of those who can't sleep the whole night through - Its a real thorn in my side not to be able to sleep normally:banghead:

Some nights are good...some nights are bad. See, I have a prosthetic leg, where I am missing my left foot. Depending on how my day goes, is how much it hurts at night.

My empathies to your physical challenge - Its a blessing that you can work as a teacher, helping the young'uns get a better grip on music - BRAVO!!!

Heh thanks. It obviously comes with difficulties... I can often be found conducting one-legged or sitting on a stool on my podium. I get the strangest looks the beginning of the year, but once things are explained and the story is told, people understand rather quickly. I really have no issue telling the story ^^ It's just a bit worse during the school year because you can't have a teacher popping percs in the middle of class ;)

Heh retirement must be great! Been to Greenville a couple of times performing. Not so much in recent years, though.

Hello mt and welcome to the forum, and the land of the sleepless. With me its my hip, must get a new one one day. What a lovely profession to be in. Teaching people to play and appreciate music. I never forget the music teacher I had who taught me about classical music.

Thanks for the warm welcome! I like to think the music teacher who inspires you is always the one you never forget. I've kept in touch with a few of my students over the years. It's nice to know that you impacted their lives, and that they remember you after all these years.

Welcome to MIMF, musicteach. That's quite an introduction, I must say. And what a career you've had. You don't have to worry about grumpiness - as you'll soon find out ;). I too am a night owl, and that too has to do with my sleeping problems. Fortunately, MIMF is open 24/7.

So, what kind of classical music do you listen to? Any favorite composers or periods? Other genres? I myself am a bit of a Chopin freak, and lately I have been (re)discovering symphonic works of the late romanticism.

May I ask who was the conductor while you were playing with the LSO?

 Welcome aboard, musicteach.

As CD said above, we are open 24/7 - I'm also retired, and except for my church responsibilities (professional church organist) there is no clock, so I too might be here at most any hour.

We know you will enjoy your time here ... it's a great forum with lots of great people, several of whom I've met in person over the years.

Thanks. Do you mean the bass range of instruments in general (ie. tuba, double bass, bass guitar, cello, bari-sax, ect) or double bass in particular?
