Phillishave failed, nil points

Bought a Phillishave cordless shaver in January, use it about once a week on average, so say it's been used about 30 times.

While cleaning it yesterday part of the head fell off; hunted high and low for it, emptied the bin I was cleaning it over, found a couple of bits but I'm still missing one of the cutters, only place left to look is under the bed, and at may age with my back that's an immovable object.

Searched for spares on line, only complete sets of 3 cutters and 3 foils available, cost between 75% and 80% of what I paid Amazon for the shaver new.

So emailed Pillips.

The cutters are not available individually as they are designed to be replaced all at the same time, unfortunately it is not possible to supply a single head for the shaver.

I read that as "they come packaged and we couldn't possibly open a package; more than our jobsworth, plus it would knock our profits to hell and gone"

I can understand their argument possibly for a shaver that has seen daily use for 2 or 3 years, but would have thought there would be some provision for accidents.

Whatever happened to customer service?

I have used a Braum for the last 34 years and have found that parts are available from several companies on line, and of course cheaper. Even buying razor blades is very expensive. You buy a kit, then when you want more blades to fit the handle it is double the price. Currently I need a new rechargeable battery for the Braum (which has to be soldered in) plus foil and cutter. Total price? £40.00. Almost worth buying a new one. (or growing a beard).

Parts are available for Phillishaves too, but not individual cutters, only a set of 3 cutters and foils for, typically, £30-£35, I only paid £42 for the complete thing. So unless I find the errant cutter soon, it all goes in the bin.

I'm just trying to broadcast the facts so some people may think twice about buying Phillips!!

Funnily enough I have never used one, no sign of a beard yet. But I remember a time when you could always replace parts, now it seems to be "sorry, you need a new one."

I did buy an electric shaver when I was in hospital but they do not do a good close shave so I still use a wet shaver.

I used two diffenet models from Philishave series in the past. I, too, wanted to replace the cutters at one point, but as in Mike's case the price put me off. Quite a bit.

Besides, I was never able to get nearly as good results with an electric shaver as a could with a good old disposable razor. After trying out many different brands I went for Gillette Blue X and have been using it for a few years now. Never looked back.

I've never even tried a razor, using a Philishave electric that was a birthday present,
now using a second Philishave starting when I was in my forties, now 61.
I replaced the cutters two years ago, over $40, making it like new.

Just because you can find an address and contact the manufacturer,
doesn't mean they should just ignore their own distribution and franchise contracts.

Don't short-change yourself by tossing your shaver.
If you're stuck buying three new cutters, you've got two new ones waiting.
Most people wear down the top two cutters, unless they get into rotating the head.
This can be all good, unless you get into rotating your head too much about it.

I used rotary electric shavers for years (before the beard) and never thought to rotate the assembly for better wear. Cool idea .

I strongly object to being expected to pay about 75% or more of the price of a new shaver, I still think individual parts should be available not just sets of 3. I went to a local shop today that specialises in spares and repairs for shavers and other small electrical items, they did not have the part in stock, and could only obtain the set of 3 heads and cutters - at a cost of £40!! only £2 less than I paid for the shaver.

However I was told that "well yes you could use it with cutters in only 2 of the 3 heads."

Mike have you brought a Chinese fake shaver (imitation)?

The advantage with Braum is you only have one foil and one cutter. Harder to lose bits. I am not sure if I am meant to but I regularly rotate the cutter head for the same purpose

teddy that's a bit like swapping your pistons over every 1000k

Yes Colin. Some people say that the cutter and foil wear in together. Like pistons or tyres. But if you do it every week they do not get a chance to form a pattern and it does keep the wear on both even. It seems to work alright. Imagine swooping your pistons every 1000 miles. :D

If it works for you why change it

Can't you use the razor with two foils/blades?

Exactly why I have one ... a beard, that is ... :nut:
That's cool.

I'd consider a beard, too (sideburns, as well)-- but there's one problem...

I have blonde hair (a little darker every year, granted)- but my beard & sideburns come in black.

Now, my mustache comes in blonde- so it stays.

I make very occasional user of an old Remington electric shaver, but most of the time, I'm a foam & blade guy.
