And to think that what one sees from the train window is but a minuscule fraction of Russia - It just boggles the mind! I am constantly reminded about one of Fyodor Tyutchev's verses:

"Who would grasp Russia with the mind?
For her no yardstick was created:
Her soul is of a special kind,
By faith alone appreciated."

With this in mind, I perceive that no Western Power, Eastern Power, or Southern Power will ever understand Russia - except through Faith.

Comrade one thing that I have learned is that to understand a culture/country you must try to learn the language however the views from the window are very similar to parts of NZ in particular the timber houses. If I were younger I would love to visit Russia.

Kommisar Kolin,

Even if you don't know the language, a trip on the "TransSib" will open your eyes and you'll be a changed man - Just keep your mind open and don't think that everyone is a thief or a crook, even though there might be some scoundrels who will try to spoil your trip, or sell you something you don't need or bad food on the platform next to the train.

What a fascinating piece of film Colin. I used to love travelling down to Italy on the train, when I was younger. First the ferry crossing, then the change of train at Paris. The different scenery and architecture as we moved South, and the different people who got on and off the train as we progressed. Slices from the cake of life.

The reforms that Beeching made to Brit rail were replicated in NZ a few years ago which of course caused nearly all the small settlements which came into existance due to the railway to now become ghost towns with dilapidated buildings looking like a hollywood film set, but they would make some interesting walk/cycle ways.
