Do we have a future i,e one that will ensure the survival of the species?

I believe we have a great future ahead of us as a species...I don't give a wooden haypenny for the Malthusian Doom and Gloom predictions trumpeted throughout the media by political action groups and political interest groups.

I tend to agree but we will need a lot of help from science and less interference from politicians plus we must IMO control the burgeoning population growth that needs more and more energy as it expands.

Ah, but there is a reason for the thawing of the Russian soil - To provide for the billions yet to come. Russia can easily feed a global population in the trillions without breaking a sweat. Russia is blessed with wonderful soil - What man cannot feed, She(Russia) can...

@Bill - I am beside myself as to the vicious vitriol directed at Russia because She is not like other Western democratic Nations. We must remember that She only "recently" i.e. 1991, ejected Communism into the dustbin of History. And now we witness once again those who wish to run Russia into Chaos. Irregardless of what people say about Putin being the bad boy with billions under his bedsheets, he was elected by over 50% of Russians. The majority of Russians reject Revolution, they want Evolution, and an Evolution taking place with stability in Society and Government during this time of transition. It will take about 3 generations before Russia is "normalised". Russians wanted a strong man in the Kremlin and they got what they wanted.

Trillions? Now that is a frightening thought, what is theWorld population at the present? From what I can gather it was 7 billion in 2011. . Russia can grow and feed one thousand billion people?
The poor undeveloped countries are where the most population growth will occur which is where energy comes into the equation and it is energy that I was referring to.
To produce and distribute food to where it is wanted takes energy it has to be “planted harvested and packaged” and then distributed.
To provide the means of doing this means more vehicles/aeroplanes/ships plus the fuel to run them. This will mean a huge dependency on oil reserves that is if we continue to use oil and I think somemajor changes are in store for us in that respect.

The successful distribution will allow these countries to increase their population even more and of course they will need and demand a better standard of living I.e. decent houses, education and more things such as refrigerators, computers, electricity, TV, cars and of course jobs and water.

Ah, Br. Colin - I do see we have quite some different views on population and its ramifications. No probs, mate:D
Yes, there will need to be some "rethink" as to energy, but I believe it is all do-able. Question for you dear brother: Do you see a glass as half-empty or as half-full?

Firstly I think we agree on 99% of things, the one that we would disagree on is best left alone as it can lead to heated exchanges between some people (not you and my humble self of course) :D
I needed to find an article that I had read last year that would be a good place to start it is by Graham Zabel and deals with the relationship between population and energy it is of course theory but to my uneducated mind makes a lot of sense, it is a bit of a read with lots of links that I have not followed.

A fascinating paper Colin. It will take me a little while to read through it (and even longer to understand it)

Yes it is a long read and such a lot of links but people become consumers and that I think is the nub of it
