A word of elaboration: I originate from a suburb between Manchester and Oldham, Lancashire. Just on the other side of Oldham, not far away, is the area of Saddleworth. This is where the Whit Friday Brass Band Festival has been held since 1884 and is still held in the 12 villages of Saddleworth.
Each band plays it's piece in front of the adjudicator's building in each village, travelling between villages by coach.
The adjudicators know only the number of each band, given to them on the day.
Between 2200 and 2230hrs, the result of the adjudicators in each village announce the result. Then the adjudicators in the last village announce the winner, the compilation of the results from all the villages involved.

I have been to many of these Festivals in good weather and bad. It has always been an immense pleasure to me and has resulted in my great passion for Brass Bands
