    Windoze query

I note a load of files in the Windoze folder showing in blue print, with titles all including "uninstall", I'm tempted to delete them as they don't seem to be of much use. If I want to uninstall Windoze I'll use Format C:

    Any ideas, comments? Delete?
    Cheers MIKE.

Further problems with Software, Drivers this time

I was surprised and somewhat annoyed when trying to download a driver, even if one knew exactly which driver one wanted sites would not allow one to just download it, but insisted on downloading "Driver manager" or some similar rubbish.

Having clicked on what I assumed was the driver I wanted, the site then downloaded Driver manager, automatically started installing that, stalled wanting Microsloth NET Framework, which it proceeded to download and install again stalling because that needed an update, by this time a quarter of an hour had elapsed (I had been out of the room having a snack and a cuppa else I'd have killed the farce before it went as far as trying to install Driver Manager).

It's not always easy trying to get drivers from manufacturers, quite a few seem to be outsourcing this, so you get the same or similar "download Driver manager" problem; on the face of it DM sounds a good idea, it scans your PC and tells you which drivers are out of date, when it does it then wants to charge you money to register for the service before it downloads the update.

I was looking for a driver for a USB wireless dongle, so I could get on line from a laptop from anywhere in the house; ideally Windoze should find a driver for a new piece of kit when It's plugged in by searching the web if a CD is not available - wrong, it might search the web, but it's not guaranteed to find one, I suspect it only scans Microsloth's site.

As a matter of interest what is the use of Microsloth's NET Framework, can one manage without it?
    Cheers MIKE.

Do you use MS FIXIT Mike? It has helped me several times. And why the dongle? Do you have reception problems with wireless?

The dongle is for a laptop that does not have a wireless LAN card. One of the laptops refuses to go on line at all not wireless nor even with a hard wired connection, when I try to get on line it says Windoze can't find an IP address for it. I have a 4 port plus wireless router

Further problems, the laptop battery fully charged is only good to run the laptop for 20 minutes with no mains power. I'm still testing the other laptop and a new battery.

Why do I have 2 laptops you ask, my original one was showing signs of the battery packing up, it had no WLAN, only 256K RAM and only a CD ROM, I saw an identical model on Ebay for spares and repair, with wireless and DVD, but other minor problems, so bought it to attempt making 1 out of 2, if I can get the WLAN working on both, and reasonable battery life then I could have 2 working, one for late night bedrom use (got mains there) the other for taking out and about (slightly bigger pics than the camera view finder) I found some 1GB ram on offer so ordered 2 for the Photo one, and will put 2x 256K in the bedtime reading/listening one

As for Fixit or any of the other apps that claim to "fix" a PC they may do some good occasionally but have the capability to ruin things almost beyond repair, methinks they should spell fix with a U. Messing with registry entries without a very good understanding of the ramifications can be disastrous.
    Cheers MIKE.

Those are the automatic updates to the Windows OS ... They are safe to delete, except maybe for the latest one. The only reason they remain is so that you could return to a prior version if something went wrong with the current version/update.

Unfortunately, they can only be deleted one at a time ... ... thanks to Bill Gates.

I do quite nicely without using it ... except once a year when I do our taxes - I use TurboTax (Intuit) which requires MS Net Framework for whatever reason.

Sounds like a firewall setting ... perhaps the port it is looking for is blocked (?)
