Well, maybe I can give you both, then. I believe this short piece by Jarrett blends the best qualities of what--at least for me-- "good" jazz should be comprised. It has a strong flowing melody, the inter-play amongst the musicians is free and easy and one can almost hear the joy and sense of abandon they are feeling when they play together;Jarrett, of course, is a master of improvisation, but whether the most of this work is in fact improvised or not {which I tend to doubt} its development is fresh and eminently coherent, at least to this listener's ears.
I noticed in your post that you wrote for "you may be". There is no maybe about it for me--what about you?

Steve, I enjoy his trio works very much which is jazz in my book it is just the clip you chose did not press my horn or ring my bell, no offence intended

It sounds to me like a jazz version of Einaudi - who I also avoid like the plague- repetitive tinkles but with added drums and occasional interventions by other instruments; for me nothing of interest, the only WOW reaction would be "wow, people actually buy that?" I did listen to the end but only to see if anything happened.

Mike I had the same reaction but Steve likes it so different people different things eh

Steve why do you doubt that this work is improvised?

Hi, Colin. First of all, I took no offense from your earlier post; as you said, we all have different opinions and feelings about the music to which we listen, which makes it interesting.
Secondly, I could be wrong--no big surprise there--but that particular song just struck me as being too short and too smoothly played for a lot of improvisation to have developed during its playing {I believe it's a cover of a Joni Mitchell song}. I've heard other Jarrett performances of longer pieces where it sounded to me as if both he and his sidemen were developing/improvising a lot more on the original theme. But again, it's really all just guesswork on my part. Anyway, here's an example of a piece by him which sounds to me as if it has more improvising going on: Keith Jarrett – The Rich (And The Poor)

Steve your link does not work for me? I think we are defining improvisation differently if you read what I have posted to date and check out the article to which I gave a link it should become clear e.g., it does not mean that you have to play say 8 or 16 bars differently each time you play but the article tells it much more eloquently than I ever could.
@stu I heard Phillip Glass once try to explain what music is and he gave an answer that I thought was excellent he said “Music is a place” for me that is spot on

Steve if you google 'box net' you will find a free on line storage site which you can upload your music to and also paste links on any forum to your music this will reach everyone whereas spotify doesn't. just a suggestion

Yes Mike there are quite a few out there I have been using Box Net for about 5-6 years but think I am due for a change, will have to do a bit of searching for a really good free one.

Could you have another go I just don't understand :confused: I am interpreting it as - improvise??? but at different tempo and melody and individually.

this music called jazz, is based on improvising. Even when you're playing time, or a "head", its about sounding unique within the confines of the tune.
Being that, no one person sounds exactly alike another, taken into account.
These same notes we speak of, can be interpreted at different tempo and at different times, and still be within the parameters of the number.
It's about musicial freedom of expression, I feel.

@jazznut Yes I agree, I have stated in my earlier posts that "true jazz" is improvisation so in that context it is limited to ens of say up to 8-9 players. once we get to E.g 10+ then we need a score to keep all players together and the only time a player will improvise is during a solo or duet! does that fit in with what you are thinking?

JHC...that's about the size of it. It's what causes this music we love to generate such excitement.
I love to hear say, Joe Lovano, or Joshua Redman play and interpret a number that Ben Webster or Duke Ellington loved to play.
I enjoy small group encounters, 3,4,5, maybe 6 musicians stretching, twisting, searching for each voice, creating call and response, within his own interpretation of the number.

Sometimes it's ok for this music to be disjointed, and not pretty, and searching, because that what life is, not always picture perfect.
This is my personal view, and certainly not for everyone.

BASIC AFRICAN CHARACTERISTICS:

1. It must divide the main beat into 3 parts, as in a compound 6/8 or 12/8 with a "4/4" pulse on 1-4-7-10.
2. It must use a combination of major and minor pentatonic scales which combine to give an extended blues scale: C-Eb-F-G-Bb/C-D-E-G-A, which combined, yoelds C-D-Eb-E-F-(F#)-G-A-Bb.
3. It uses improvisation.
4. It "bends" notes in emulation of a voice.
5. It is a group effort (tribal) which also focuses on different soloists.
