Best popular song/performance ever?

That's an impossible question to answer Eric, you will probably get a different answer from every post, example if I was going to select Stardust I'd probably go for the original Hoagy Carmichael, I'd be just as likely to name Mel Tormé's "Mountain Greenery", almost anything Cleo Laine does, including Cleo Laine with Ray Charles "Summertime", or a Jimmy Rushing blues, different styles for different numbers, all good, some maybe "best" even, but all subject to individual tates.

Put Cleo Laine and Mel Tormé together and you get some beautiful and sometimes amusing tracks, there are some samples on the Amazon MP3 site

Thanks Mike - my personal opinion, and of course it is personal, is that this Nat Cole rendition of Stardust is very special. Better than Hoagy's singing voice by a country mile, and such a beautiful orchestration and arrangement. It has always been my favourite popular track.

Dankworth I loved. Cleo Laine has never done anything for me I'm afraid. That's what I think this forum is for though, expressing opinions. We are all totally different in the sense of what moves us.
