• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

In order to post a new topic - or reply to existing ones - you may join and become a member by clicking on Register New User. It's completely free and only requires a working email address (in order to confirm your registration - it will never be given away!). We strive to make this a friendly and informative forum for anyone interested in pipe organs and organ music.

My goodness Yohanus! Is that the only organ in the cathedral? Do the pedals actually sound? I couldn't hear anything from them.

Yeah...sadly they are really the ONLY 5 old usable pipe organ in Malaysia. We wish someone may help us, but its really hard to get someone to suit our budget... Unlike the other pipe organ in other state, it has been Fully restored sending it to London refine and repair.

Thanks for posting.. a little gem I am sure when in working order. Questions: 1. can you couple the manuals as well as couple to tje pedal to obtain a full organ sound??? Lars might know more or perhaps other organist here... maybe a historical society/ restoration group might be interested in helping due to being a Willis and the age of the organ.. Have you tried to contact any of them? btw try not to play barefoot on pedals....LOL

I can coupler them, but the problem is the 16' is not sounding well, i believe there is some leakage in the air chamber because you also might notice some stops does not sounds the way it should be. Currently we always try to pull all stops to make the sounds vibrates more to have a louder voice ( Although its really a Wrong way of destroying a proper piece ). I dont know where to get the pipe organ restoration people, i try to google but just dont know which to ask. Oh ya...i wear slippers that day, thats why i use barefoot, i know its not good and some technic is hard to be played by barefoot.

DO not laugh to hard..but one time I used duct tape to repair a leak in the wind chamber and any connecting tubes and it worked.... if it is canvass sealed might try canvass repair tape to help with the air leak until better repairs can be made. a thought!!

Very interesting organ ... there's more info on it here including the stop list and information about the last renovation.

Pipe organ servicing in outlying areas can be a huge problem ... and can be expensive for the parish. Wondering if you have a line item in the parish budget for instrument care/tuning?

Another possibility is securing a 'grant' for the repairs ... there are other pipe organs about Malaysia, so getting service should not be a problem, except for the usual fees of the tech.

Obviously, the organ needs to be tuned periodically, maybe you can talk about this with the service technician, too?

Might start a campaign in the parish for organ repair ... one way is to have parishioners sponsor a pipe or mechanical part of the organ. They, in effect, can call one or several parts of the organ "theirs" and it lessens the burden on the parish budget that way.

Hi, some of the senior church council mention it is being tune or service regularly by the KLAIS german pipe organ technician which also provide service for our ONLY national public pipe organ. But seriously, i dont know what kind of service is being done regularly... I dont believe KLAIS will leave some pipe UNTUNED at all...

I do not know how much budget they spend for pipe organ, Malaysia do have other pipe organ, BUT they are mostly unusable in the web you given. Some of them has been destroy by termites because they do not use it regularly due to the modern charasmatic service came into a trend. Some were just simply DISAPPEAR....

I went through some website for ORGAN fund raising or charity, but they seems to be target to save the historical pipe organ than this young pipe organ. As you might notice its not too old compare to alot baroque pipe organ...

Anyway, I am very new to this parish and i am actually 20 years old... Who will listen to such a school boy... many people dont believe i know you guys here and i give them few suggestion like the NEAREST pipe organ builder in philipine... But sadly, no one will cares to listen to me such a young boy...

You can give them my personel email address if you like as you have it for reference or questions. Many times people in the parish do not listen to any organist regardless of age...except when they need a favor etc... Hang in there something will come about... btw.. there are many good young organist on youtube too. i.e. Gert Van Hoef (17 trs) ,

Some good news for the organ scene in Malaysia

Something to bring a smile to the faces of organ lovers is the story of the 1914 vintage organ in the Church of the Assumption, Georgetown, Penang. The organist there, Leonard Selva - a man of enormous energy and drive - for some years had nursed this organ along, seeking support for its restoration. Eventually, with the help of a TV show he produced and support from the local people, state government and Air Asia, the church was able to return the organ to the UK for restoration. I am playing at a concert in a couple of weeks in Thanksgiving for the restoration of the organ. It's a great story of dedication, drive and perseverance :D
