Stu, probably Larry Elgart, his instrument was alto sax, Les played trumpet.

If you watch a few vids of the LEs and Larry band you see Larry (he of the bushy beard) taking alto solos

Nothing wrong with going back a bit, Mike. As Humphrey Lyttleton once said, "It isn't when music was played, it's the way it was played that counts.

Before I was born - this 1932 version of 'Moten Stomp' with Basie as a sideman piano player, and it has a closing riff that has always worked for me. In fact my son sometimes refers to this track as being a particular favourite of his!

Yep she now leads the family big band, based Sweden. See my previous post #25 in this thread, the second number on that vid really shows her trombone skills and range, probably due to her playing trumpet as well. Or search Youtube for Gunhild Carling, you will also see/hear her on trumpet (even 2 or 3 at once), flute, harp, harmonica, bagpipes and reeds.

The whole family appear to play something. Father Hans "Cooling" Carling who plays trumpet was the king of swing in Malmoe at school dances in the 1960s. His wife Aina plays banjo and guitar and the children Max clarinet, violin and tenor sax, Gerd piano, trombone and saxes, Gunhild nearly all known instruments and Ulf drums and vocal. Gerd´s Husband Tomas plays the bass.

Some also tap dance or juggle or generally act the clown. She ain't bad looking neither!
