R.I.P. Le premiere Dame de l'orgue

Am rather at a loss for words.

Repos paisiblement, Madame Marie-Claire. You were an inspiration for many generations, including mine.

Truly a sad moment in the organist world ... I was never fortunate enough to have heard her play in a concert venue, but do have several recordings on LP's.

At last, at home and in peace with her brother, Jehan. We will miss you dearly.

She seems to have beeen known largely for her rather prolific recording activities. They should deservedly outlast the mortal flesh. I had begun to wonder how much longer she would last - she would have been about 86 years old. My understanding is that she could be quite particular about exactly which organs she used for recordings.

It is rather interesting that organists seem, at least for recording purposes, to be choosy about instruments. I'm sure no one believes that Bach needs a Silverman, or that Franck or Widor need a Cavaille-Coll - or what there are left of them. But it stands to reason that the more genuine the article is, the better. After all, violinists still seem to like Stradivarius violins!!

I would agree that she deserved the title of "first lady of the organ" -- never mind a small clutch of American types (I won't mention names) that have tried to claim it.

    Requiescat in pacem.
