Software updates

I'm getting a bit fed up with continual updates, Windows every time I close down, Firefox and Java sometimes twice a week, and plenty more probably that I don't use.

Why can't they get it right first time; security threats?? I would have thought decent programmers could write secure code by now. Ideally new bells and whistles could wait until enough have accumulated to make it worth while.

I have 2 identical PCs networked and both on line, one automatically updates every time it gets switched off, the other occasionally updates maybe once or twice a month or less, they both work as near identical as each other so what good are the updates on the one machine doing?

I can see the point of anti virus software updating daily but not other apps.

It's termed 'staying ahead of the beat' in software lingo I suppose. Developers are desperately trying to keep one foot ahead of the wicked evil ones who have nothing better to do than attempt bringing the whole internet crashing down, which in turn puts them out of work, so imho, it makes no sense at all.

I have many an app that updates frequently: Acrobat Reader, Wndows Player, Java Runtime, Norton AV, Adobe Air (for streaming radio) and many others. It is aggravating I must admit, but then I know that my online sessions are going to run correctly.

I also believe that for every two steps developers are able to write in code changes, the evil ones write three new steps ... it's going to be a constant battle and probably going to get worse going forward. It's akin to the 'Cops n Robbers' games we kids played years ago.

As for the difference between the two machines, that's probably attributed to the machine's settings. We have two machines here at home as well ... identical Win 7 Dells, yet mine continually updates and Mary's doesn't do as many. It's the way she has her machine set up ... I want all those updates as my online sessions need to be productive and well protected against being hacked. I cannot afford any downtime - I need the PC for my work.

I agree with lars. Apart from viruses the constant improvements going on with software mean constant updates to give the best results. If you are still using XP, as I do, I believe these updates will soon stop as Microsoft will not be supporting it much longer. It would not be so bad if all these programs were written by the same people. Probably one update would do the lot.

It may soon apply to all of us, having to pay for what were free updates.
