Hi all,

Can anyone tell me who wrote the opera that likely has the longest name of any ever written? Your help is much appreciated!

Thanks much,

Erin

This is a link to a site that lists opera titles; I`m too lazy to count the letters to find out which is the longest  ,but if you`re not, can you post the answer? :)

possible answer...

Tannhäuser und der Sängerkrieg auf Wartburg was the longest name of any Wagner opera -- and I just looked through a list of the top 150 operas and this name is longer than any of those

Mozart's Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail is the longest that I'm seeing in the top 150.

Please do post if you find anything longer! It would make a great trivia question for one of my newsletters. (for www.OperaGifts.com) -- Oh... unless you are using it on something similar.:)

Hi Erin,

Hope this answer isn't (way too) late! The longest opera title that I know of is one by Rimsky-Korsakov. I don't know the original Russian but it's usually translated into English as "The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the Maiden Fevroniya" (or just "The Invisible City of Kitezh" for short).

I'm just looking at the titles mentioned so far, taking it easy.
I know some authentic and historic titles are waiting out there, untranslatable.
I'll have to console myself with being able to spell "The Rocky Horror Picture Show".
I know, I know, it was a seven piece rock band playing up on the balconey, not an pit orchestra,
and the fact that Rocky sat on my lap during his one foray into the audience,
made it a classical, er, class act, for my girlfriend. Yeah, she bought the tickets,
and that act made her a drama queen.
