Does it do automatic scans Mike or do you have to initiate ?

Microsoft Security is by Microsoft and is free. You can set it to scan automatically either daily or weekly at a convienient time. My doe as a short scan daily and a full scan once a week. Never had any problems and as it updates automatically as well you can just leave it to get on with things.

With AVG free you can select auto scan and if wanted specify a time to scan, or manually select scan, It is best to set it to monitor all incoming traffic, emails etc as well as daily scans of the whole PC.

I have/use Norton ... came with my ADSL subscription to CenturyLink (formerly Qwest). It runs constantly in the background and auto checks all incoming emails and anything I happen to download.

Dell XPS 8100 Studio PC - Windows 7
650 GB internal drive, 1.0 TB external drive, 360 GB portable drive (WD passport).
8 GB RAM, Intel core i5 cpu @ 2.80 GHz, 64 bit operating system.
Twin CD-RW/DVD-RW drives - nice for duplicating other CD's/DVD's.
19" flat panel monitor, Logitech desktop speakers with sub-woofer.

I have just had a virus infect my PC as I was surfing or opening emails I must have clicked on something that caused it, suddenly the PC froze and a very real looking official page displayed it had the right logos of the local police dept plus Interpol and a load of guff telling me that I had violated some such law and gave a list off offenses.
I spent a day getting rid of it and putting my PC together again.
This morning when I checked a thread on MIMF I got the following pop up,

MIMF pop up.JPG

now I don,t know whether this is dangerous or not but I sure as heck aint gona click on it so please why can’t MIMF prevent this kind of pop up?

I must offer my apologies to MIMF this has popped up on other pages so could be something still on my PC. :scold:

Could be a virus Colin. The biggest problems I have had is not so much virus infections but a file corruorion as a side effect. Microsoft Security seems to take care of everything nowadays. They also have a free program called Microsft Fixit which is great for taking care of blitches and running problems. I think you are right to avaoid clicking on this entry. To be extra safe you could download a Spyware Detection program such as Advanced System Care. This amoungst other things checks for Malware and also does a registry clean etc etc. Free or a subscripton service which has bells and whistles.

I have cracked it teddy it’s just an unwanted adware add on to FireFox, the first problem that I have had since switching and it is called called ’Selection Links’ easy to remove and you are right about Malware programs I run 'Malwarebytes' plus McAfee and a third party reg cleaner. any way problem solved

WARNING
Keep well away from "Malwarebytes" it created so many problems with my PC and was a major task to remove, but I am now nice and new and clean and happy.

I'm using a Linux distro (Mint) on a 6 year old Acer laptop.
It's very stable, hasn't crashed in 18 months, is very fast (boots in about 60 secs, closed down in 15) and is, almost, virus resistant.
Most of the hackers write code for Microsoft & mac products.
Another benefit is that the os only takes up a very small place on the hd. Only took 8gb on a usb stick to install
I only installed on my son's old uni laptop to try it, now don't even fire up the newer Windows pc.

Hi JHC,
What do you want to know?
I will say that I'm NOT a computer geek
As a general view:
Linux a few years ago was for geeks/nerds, as you had to program in something called "command line" (you still can do, and it's quite interesting:banana:
However that later distributions (distro) have become much more user friendly
They are open source, so you can get a version for free. I bought a copy, pre-loaded on a usb stick, for a couple of £'s
On most of them you can run from a cd, or usb stick (without installing it) to see if you like it
It is different from ms windows, however it's easy to learn, uses a graphic user interface (like windows)
The software available is, mostly open source (read free) and readily available and is generally compatible with ms products (if you need it)
It's very stable, I haven't had a system crash since I installed it, about 18 months ago.
It's very good on older systems, and is pretty much plug and play
If you would like anything else drop me a pm?

ps. the version I'm using is called Linux Mint, but there are 100's of different ones.
This one has good suport, and has a good interface
I'm sold on it.
Don't have to give my money to the man

Thanks Cc, that is a good explanation and 100% more than I knew previously.

I tried Linux a few years back, gave up when on trying to find a driver for my OKI colour laser; there was no driver listed, only a comment that the printer made a good paperweight! Said printer is still giving me great service, so for me Linux shot itself in the foot! I can appreciate the intentions behind Linux being free and accessible, but as well as the printer fiasco. a number of the apps I use won't run on it either.

Added to which any learning curve at my age is not really a thing I look for.

That is usually the problem with freebees. I tried Open Office but went back to Microsoft.

Talking or freebees has anyone tried "Libre Office" it has been recommended to me from another forum, MS Works has been discontinued and I am told this is a good complete office suit.

I have Open Office, rarely use it these days, don't have cause to write letters, work on spreadsheets or make presentations. If I can't communicate by email, forums, land line phone or Skype I don't communicate!

Mike, unfortunately a lot of our relatives do not have computers so I do quite a bit of letter writing but that was not the reason for my inquiry.

Not heard of it Colin but re Linux, I was talking to a local IT man and he uses it and swears by it. He is specialising in it because not many people do and he can earn more money that way. Might be worth investigating although like Mike I am not sure if this dog might be too old.
