I agree Mike and teddy and I always do a custom install but this seemed a harmless add on, you have to be careful.
Up to now all is well.

Thanks Colin. I will keep an eye out. This is going to be a problem with XP next year when they withdraw the support.

From what I can gather on other forums if you need to change from XP try to avoid Windows 8 as it has not settled down yet 7 seems to be OK, I am stuck with Vista which has a lot of the bugs ironed out now and is not too bad XP is still the most popular by a country mile.

I agree Colin. 7 seems to be just about de bugged now and also has some good features. Vista was a nightmare and 8 still has a way to go before I would touch it.

True for you maybe Chris, but if it doesn'trun the applications I want to use and does not support my peripherals then it's not of much use to me. If I was a lot younger and had the necessary time and funds to learn new apps, and buy new peripherals then I would be tempted.

I have the same problem. Insufficient mental capacity at the moment to learn a new trick.

Its a time factor mainly Colin. I am still working and my youngest is still not entirely well which means I spend about ten hours a week with her over and above what you would normally expect with a normal life. Plus we have a big project which is ongoing and takes a lot of time and energy, but could make a big difference to our retirement. Most of my so called free time is spent sleeping etc through mental and physical exhaustion. I am waiting for an operation (probably January) which will force me to stop for a while but it may affect my concentration. I found that after my heart surgery I was unable to concentrate for long. Even reading a book became a chore. So it looks like that sort of thing will have to wait for my retirement, which I hope will not be too far away.

I am deeply sorry to hear of your problems teddy and I hope they come right, I did actually mean retirement most people just relish the opportunity to go easy which is a trap that I fell into doing things that I wanted (golf, car clubs, music etc) then I brought a computer (my first) which exercised the old grey matter and still does, I also brushed up on my Russian and the old Flute came into play again but I am easily distracted when I reach a certain level and then I look for something new which is the present situation. You never know what is around the corner “Carpe diem”

Most retired people I know wonder wheere they found the time to work. There are so many things that I want to do but have not the time or energy for at the moment. I just have to make sure that I have the finances for all these things, plus of course the odd trip to the SoF.:cool::cool:

Good old Google the one tool that worked as it should and they have pulled it I am referring to their free app “gmail notifier” not the end of the world but they assume that everyone now surfs the net via a smart phone, but hey if you install Google Chrome on your PC it has a built in notifier, personally after my experiences with Chrome they can stick it.

When my 10+ year old IBM ThinkPad died, I was in the middle of a project. I found an ASUS laptop running i7 processor with 8 Gb RAM and 1 Tb hard drive. The motherboard and guts work beautifully, just like all the other ASUS motherboards out there, but the display is terrible; you have to look at the display at exactly the right angle. This is annoying when I am using the laptop out of office: I cannot show things easily to others; two cannot watch at the same time with proper view.

I have recently upgraded the operating system to Win 10 Pro. It works really nicely for me, and I use some programs that stress the system out pretty heavily.

I use Windows 7.

I used to use XP until the computer started getting really show and we had to get rid of it.

Win 7 (professional) user here. Upgraded from XP in 2010 when my old machine displayed the blue screen of death too many times.

Staying with Win 7 and not upgrading to Win 10. Happy with 7 and see no need to have the latest and greatest of things. I also drive an 11 year old car.

Getting fed up with G Mail. The adverts which keep re occurring and which they tell you will not reappear if you dismisss them keep coming back time and time again. Also it does not appear possible to totally block senders, which you can do with Hotmail. On G Mail if you block them they just keep reappearing, but in the SPAM folder. I sometimes have 20 - 30 spam messages which annoys me. Hitting BLOCK just diverts things to SPAM. Any suggestions gratefully received.

From what I can make out, using Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoomail or any similar freebie invites spam, I use one of the Virgin media cable ISPs and Thunderbird, I rarely if ever get any spam and no adverts, maybe once a month a bank I've never had an account with will tell me there is a problem with my non existent account. OK so I pay for my ISP a package deal with phone, I get around 90M download and 6M upload, due to be upgraded to about 150M in a few weeks.

@teddy I have been with gmail for years and up until recently have been quite happy but now they have changed the location of ‘contacts’ which when you >contacts you have to wait for them to d/l from mother cyber space now @a speed of 5mbps it is a bit of a wait on the other hand if you >compose and enter the first letter of the recipient you are provided immediately with a pop up list of possible contacts so not really a large problem 99% of the time.
Regarding adverts, I get none at all on the page, my spam folder has at the moment 5 emails in it there are hundreds in the trash folder. Quite honestly it beats all the others I have tried over the years. Why are you concerned with how many are in the spam folder, there is a option of deleting all spam the same with the ‘trash’ folder you can empty if you want to.

Hej Teddy :)

Does your ISP have webmail service as part of the monthly fee for internet access?

I've been using Gmail for years when on travel ... I forward my other email account to the Gmail one as it's easier to access like when I went abroad in 2010.

Have not had any problems with ads on Gmail ... but then I have it severely restricted as to whom has that Gmail address anyway.
