Folk music on Youtube

In Bills own words

In case you're wondering, I recorded the audio on my Korg D888 8-track digital recorder, so I could sing harmony with myself. I was inspired to learn this song after listening to Hayley Westenra.

Well if the folk on youtube, which is plenty of in there, then the great band called Melnitsa, I guess, not sure of a spelling actually, to be more up to date here is one of the songs:

And also the same person performed the translated version of the WarBringers form the WoW commercial:

Here's an Appalachian song on YouTube, 'Hangman', sung by Jean Ritchie. (There's a British variant of this story, a folk song called 'The Prickly Bush'. I remember hearing it first at my university's Folk Song Club when I was 18, and I've loved it ever since.)

Here's another song that I heard for the first time (and till just now, the last time) at my university's Folk Club, almost fifty years ago now. It's got a wonderful tune that may be modal in origin - gives me gooseflesh. And that's just when the Corries sing it - at my Uni's Folk Club Session, it was sung unaccompanied by a handsome lad with a beautiful (tenor) voice. :)

Edit - I just found another version, by The Watersons - by The Very Young Watersons, in fact!
This is very Yorkshire and very gorgeous.

Two versions of an old song reflecting the era they were sung in.

First Pentangle form 1968, Brutish revival folk in its pomp _ John Renbourn, Bert Jansch and Jacqui McShee

Then an up and coming folk group from 2016 - Lady Maisery - a close harmony group like the Watersons but with a modern twist

Hamish Henderson was one of the stalwarts of the folk revival. He also served in the 51st Highland Division. Here is one of his songs to a pipe tune

Two of his known songs are the Freedom Come All Ye and John McLean's March.

Here in North America, what is seen as being folk music is very different from all other continents,
unless we are hearing First Nations natives, what gave the heart-beat drum-beat to the blues of slavery.
If we ignore the ancient folk music heritage of our land, we have to listen to the others who landed.
Looking at North America from the east coast, where Europeans first settled,
you have to see folk music as coming from the instruments they brought over,
what could be classical music family heirlooms or military marching band left-overs.
Coming from the Ozarks, the Appalachians, from being mountain men to down deep in the holler,
"Jolene" by Dolly Parton is as folked up as you can call her.

I watched Miley Cyrus doing it as part of her "backyard series", her favorite old songs done acoustic.
But it was too modern a backyard and that's all it was, a live band performance.
I watched Dolly Parton singing it as a staged performance, even if it was a professional TV stage.
A fake barn, a fake fence, a stage floor instead of dirt, with a country gentleman playing acoustic guitar.
But that's all it was, with a lot of Dolly Parton close-ups showing her to be a little too fake herself.

This video has it all, the song, the singing, the barns, the clothes, the vehicles, the clotheslines and the great outdoors.
As far as being a new millennium update, having a man, losing your man, wanting your man as someone else is taking your man,
you might start wondering what being a man in a mans' world is, when a man wants to be a woman while still being a man amongst men.
Cross your fingers, cross your eyes, make a cross, as you watch a cross-dressing chart-crossing hit.
I know... I know... you want to cross me off too.

Only three months till St Patrick's Day. :)

I read today (on another music forum that I belong to) that the Donegal fiddler Vincent Campbell died on the second of this month (December 2018).

Here's a strathspey - in Donegal, called 'a highland' - from a video that someone posted on his mourning thread.
It's lovely.

Rest in peace. I hope there are fiddles in heaven. :)

This carol popped into my head, and I found this lovely version on YouTube. Okay, it's a bit late - although the Medieval Christmas lasted until February 2nd, Candlemas Day, the feast day of the Presentation in the Temple.

Another Joan Baez song - this one in Spanish. As a teenager I was fascinated by this and learned the lyrics - the only Spanish I know. But now I repudiate the idea of non-repentance in the service of macho violence. Nice song, though. :)

Oh the Prickly Bush - I like The Watersons & Steeleye Span singing this, but this simple version is very effective.
