Where I grew up they were known as ladybugs. They would fly around and land vertically on our food plates - here in the desert we don't see to many of them, thank goodness.

Lars. we encourage ladybirds as they eat the greenfly which can plague the roses among other things. You can even buy them by mail order. You can also buy ladies by mail order, but that is another matter.
