I put it somewhere

How many times do we hear or see that phrase.

I'd love to know where Somewhere is, it must be quite a large but cramped spot it seems everybody puts things "Somewhere" for them to never be seen again.

Another point strikes me, the best way to find something you put "somewhere" is to buy a new one, the mislaid one will reappear within a few days.

Yes, a guarenteed method Mike. I have five tape measures and three pipe cutters from the time I was building the extenstion. My wife likes to put things "somewhere safe" which effectively means "lost"

I'd like to say that in my years of teaching I have discovered that cases, lockers, busses, shoes, socks, uniforms have all been subject to being the "somewhere" where everything seems to disappear... Did I mention my desk? Aha yes...the most notorious culprit.

I have a desk just like that too, musicteach ...

No socks, but one corner is always a disorganized mess ...

Every time I move something to a new location after it has sat in the same place for 10 years I lose it. Lost my soldering iron that way, and rediscovered it a couple years later while looking for something else.

Quickest way to find a missing tool it to purchase a new one. You'll no more than get home from the hardware and be poking around somewhere for some reason and the old one will turn up.

I once read a Dick Francis novel that began with the words (or something like them) - 'My brother always keeps things in the place where he thinks he'd first look for them if he lost them'.

I've tried to follow that principle, and though not foolproof, it does seem to work.

Writing it down is a good idea - so long as you remember to look at your notebook, or whatever.

During the past few years, we've sometimes let family members stay in our house while we're on holiday. I've produced a 'book of the house' with entries in alphabetical order. Something like that as an inventory of things to find might be a possibility.
