If you already have Microsoft Security Essentials installed, you might continue to receive antimalware signature updates for a limited time ...

And this news bit from the Telegraph reads in part ...

The UK government announced last week that it had negotiated a special deal with Microsoft to provide Windows XP support and security updates across the whole UK public sector for the next 12 months, at a cost of £5.548 million.

Looks like those who live in the UK are the lucky ones :)

I am amazed that the Brit public sect is still using XP! I must fire up my old lap top and see what happens.

If my prior systems (XP) mother board hadn't crapped out, I would still be on XP for sure. I was rather forced to take one of two options: Windows Vista or Windows 7 ... I chose the latter and went with the professional 64 bit version.

Locally most all government offices are still on XP, and my dentist was/is using a DOS based system for scheduling appointments and still has a working dot matrix printer.

By far, the XP version was the best ever, imho ... it is lots more user friendly than Win7 for sure. Microsoft should have kept a good thing.

Most businesses here are on Vista which seems to have sorted it's problems out, I have been with Vista for approx 5 yrs and at first it was a pain in the proverbial but seems to tick along OK now. but my Firefox is continually freezing and only responds to a reboot but I keep IE9 going despite many prompts to switch to Chrome.

Colin,

Wondering if that is related to FF or Vista ... I've had a few times where FF froze on my Win 7 machine and had to reboot. I'm thinking it may be a little bug with this latest release .. it (FF) never did this before a few months back.

That would tie up with my experience it was great to start with.

[smug grin]Firefox is great on XP[/smug grin]

Your smugness is duly warranted, Mike :)

Yes it is (was, for me) ... everything about XP was a stable as the rock of Gibraltar.

If only that mother board hadn't gone to outer space ... :nut:

Lars & Bill, do you not have the original CDs for XP from the previous computer? A quick dose of Format C: and insert XP CD... ... ... ... ...

I can still find new and refurbished PCs with Win7 over here, not that I need one my 2 XP machines are still going (touch wood)

If you are not in the public sector i.e. NHS etc you can purchase updates but it will be expensive. I can buy a good used laptop for the price of one years updates.

I had them, but the problem was the mother board ... after backing up the entire drive onto an external drive, I gave the old drive to my son and he put it to good use on his system. I admit that it was a steep learning curve migrating to Win7, but I love its power and capabilities and have finally gotten a bead on how it likes to store things and where they mysteriously go.

I only have space for one machine anyway.

First thing I do is set up folders for what data I want, where I can find it, not buried in my this that and the other that's for dummies

Partition the drive(s) music on one photos on another etc another partition for all downloads
