• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

In order to post a new topic - or reply to existing ones - you may join and become a member by clicking on Register New User. It's completely free and only requires a working email address (in order to confirm your registration - it will never be given away!). We strive to make this a friendly and informative forum for anyone interested in pipe organs and organ music.

hbw to wav

What is the way to convert from encrypted HW to wav? Some free organs are hbw, I dont understand why. Is it technically possible to pass them to wav?

As a continuation of Martins snake-oil description I'd say that hbw "encryption" is a snake pit we should avoid messing with. Even though it seems to only be a certain bitwise operation necessary (and removal of some junk at beginning), I think we should stay clear of any samples made for usage solely with MDAs software. Especially since the licensing of most of the samplesets doesn't allow any modifications anyway. Use free samples (or buy non-encrypted ones) and make more free samplesets for usage with a free VPO like GrandOrgue instead!

Kind regards

Hello, the legal point is clear.
I would like to know about the technical aspect (after according with the samples owner).

The legal point is very, very important.

If hbw is not a "effective technological measures", we can talk about it or even read such files in GO.
If hbw is a "effective technological measures" talking about the format or circumventing is illegal.

The copyright laws have a very broad definition of "effective technological measures" - so even snake-oil encryption could be protected.

So before talking about the technical part, we must be ruled out, that hbw is a "effective technological measures".

I understand this very good. Now I want to know if it is technically possible (and eventually simple, that is not too horrifyingly time consumíng - eventually test the way with one pipe) before asking for authorization to "Grandorguify" a HW-VPO. I am looking at to owners, and I prefer not say who it is for now.
Now the why. I think of two samples owners who are both "disciples" of HW, I understand them "because HW is better than GO" But they put the VPOs for free in the web.
In one case, I asked for the wav-samples, and the man said yeah, here is the link.
In the other case, even more important for me, (because that would be my only mitteldeutscher baroque organ, important for Bach organ works), I now personnally the owner. And I know very well 1 - its better to speak clearly with him, 2 - I am sure he has less time to send the samples in a special way just for me, 3 - I suppose strongly he will agree at least for personal use of the samples. I must be clear in my differents proposals. So if it is technically possible, I would mention it at some stage of the "negociations". I mean, this way he wins time and make another colleague happy.

Contacting the sampleset owner/producer and asking for the un-encrypted .wav files and a special personal license to use them is definitely the right way to go about it, I think. Regarding technical issues I also think that history has shown that almoast everything is possible for mankind to achieve, but the real question we must ask ourselves before is if we really should do it or not...

Kind regards

Dear Lars and e*, ok, I will try. In fact I dont care about any copyright, since I live in a land without protection for authors. But I want to come back safe from time to time to Europe. Nevertheless, I will ask the second man for the samples in wav. Thanks!
