I just registered and want to share something about myself with all of you. I am a retired librarian/computer programmer. Other pursuits: reading good mystery novels, collecting and planting California native plants, and trying to get alpine/rock garden plants to grow. I can manage a passable basic German if needed; I also dabble in Polish, Hungarian, and had 5 years of Latin in school. I don't do Tweets or Facebook or other giddy things. I don't have a cellphone; I am not an important person. I live in Redwood City, California, with my partner.

I recently became aware of the virtual organ scene. I was a self-taught church organist about 30 years ago. I loathe the sound of electric organs. So I have downloaded the free set of Hauptwerk and also Grand Orgue. I have purchased a Masterkey-61 keyboard to use for a start.

I find both Hauptwerk and Grand Orgue rather opaque?/baroque?/unapproachable? in their install instructions. Yes, I have viewed the Lars Palo Youtube videos. Yes, I am aware there is a 230-page manual of instructions for Hauptwerk. I am not an audio engineer so I don't understand things like channels, latency, steppers, polyphony and so on. Nor am I a nerd who likes to do things electronic. I'm just trying to be able to press a note on a keyboard and hear a sound in my headphones, for a start.

Anyone have any idea how to get Grand Orgue to recognize my keyboard? Anyway, thanks in advance for your patience.

 Welcome to Magle International Music-Forums,

I have been a church organist since 1961 and still hold a position in a Lutheran church here with a II/9 Möller pipe organ built in 1979.

Being a sort of 'dyed in the wool' pipe organ kind fo guy, I have played many 'toasters' over the years during my church profession. Some were pretty darn good, others were ... well ... erm ... uhh ... let's just say a billy goat whose tail is being yanked sounded better.

I had a long affiliation with Allen, both in sales and as a road technician/installer while in Southern California.

Anyway, we do have an excellent forum area that deals with VPO's and a number of very knowledgeable members who are experts in that field, so you have come to the right place to learn more about them.

Enjoy your time here ...

Wow! Now I don't feel so bad, as a professional electric guitarist.
I was making a sign for a buy and sell store,
and he had a nice looking computer keyboard for sale, $20, made in California,
what Eddy Van Halen used, and please notice Jimi Hendrix in my avatar,
so I went for it and brought it home.
Needless to say, it was a unique creation that I couldn't plug into anything.
It was nice that I traded it back for something else.

It's nice to know you're not twittering at me from behind.

But for a librarian, you have a very totally in your, uh, face, user name.
