Which security software do you use ?? For the last 4-5 years I have used McAfee at around NZ$85 but do have the odd little niggle I see that Norton has a higher recommendation at about the same price but I had Norton for a couple of years awhile back and found it slowed the PC down quite a bit. I also tried a free one but was not impressed and would not go there again.

I have used Norton for many years. My former employer (from whom I retired in 2006) offered it to all employees free. It was the 'gold version' and never expired ... well at least not until I retired.

The company that provides me with my internet connection gives all users Norton AV for free. My current version is 19.9.1.14 which is not the latest version, but still quite effective and automatically updates itself, constantly runs in the background, and does a complete scan one day a week (per my settings).

I have not noticed any degradation of PC speed using Norton. I do have 16 Gb of Ram, however, so I can do lots of multi-tasking on my PC and not worry much about loss of computing speed.

I've always had problems with McAfee on any system I've owned. I have to carefully watch what I download from other sites as those downloads often include McAfee by default and I have to uncheck the box to make sure my system doesn't get contaminated with McAfee.

I guess it all boils down to what works for each of us. I've always been please with every produce Peter Norton produced.

I use AVG free version, never had a problem that it hasn't dealt with in over ten years, and I'm often on line for more than ten hours a day. Maybe I don't go on many dodgy sites.

Lars, 16GB Ram, that is impressive I must be way behind the game I only have 4GB Ram and 500GB hard drive but I do have a 500GB back up drive “Seagate” I think I may give Norton a try.
In your experience does McAfee remove easily from hard drive?

Colin,

You should be able to do that from your PC control panel.

I once had an irritating removal process trying to take iTunes off my machine. I piggy backed (unknowingly) on a software download not related to Apple whatsoever and installed itself. Once that gets hold of a system, it does not want to let go ... took me several days removing all the individual little directories and files it created all over my C:/ drive.

Lars, I have uninstalled it about 2 years ago i just wondered if they had added some hooks in the last couple of years.

Thanks Albert and Mike for your input.

For a freebee I find Avast very good. AVG always seemed slow as does McAfee. If you are not using dodgy sites Avast should do a good job.
