• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

In order to post a new topic - or reply to existing ones - you may join and become a member by clicking on Register New User. We strive to make this a friendly and informative forum for anyone interested in pipe organs and organ music.

Recording audio & video

Hi,
Does anyone record audio & video of the pipe organ?
I have a Zoom H2 for audio which works pretty well, but for a course I'm doing I have to submit some work as an Audio / Video recording, presumably to prove it's me doing it.

I have a pretty decent digital camera, but it has no external mic input, so I had thought of recording using that and the H2 and then editing so they are one using imovie or something similar.

But I wondered if anyone here was using a more elegant solution - HD camera with external mic? - if so, any recommendations.

Thanks!

You should be able to do the job with a camcorder, pick one with a connection for an external microphone as the built in ones may not be adequate for the job. Some compact cameras have audio/visual recording too, but again the mic will not be up to the job as you can hear from this clip, maybe not organ music but may give some idea of what the equipment is capable of. (JVC camcorder using internal mic)

Not the best quality, this was only my second attempt at video, the sound was from a portable which didn't help. Dancers are from the Morena dance group, performing Slovak music and dance, based in North London, this taken at Swanage folk festival in September)

To get the best results you must use a separate sound recording equipment, of course depending on what you want to achieve.
I have a Zoom H4 + a pair of AKG CK 92's. The Zoom's built-in mics give clarity, the AKG's give ambience and catch the low frequencies. The problem of any built-in mics is the narrow stereo effect - the mics are too near each other. The AKG's I can place freely. With this setup I have recorded almost all my youtube videos that were not recorded in my church (there I have even better mics (Sennheiser MKH 20)).
I also experimented a lot with different mics for my camcorder, but the quality was not the same; there was always some limiting factor, the worst being the automatic level adjusting. Camcorders are not meant for hifi audio.
I also made some general mic tests: http://youtu.be/JYcDRGgnYB8

Hi - thanks both for your help.
I'm going to try with my existing Zoom H2 to see how we get on for a start.
I can place that in the middle spot for all the speakers, so hopefully I'll have something I can put up over the Christmas period when I have some time off the day job.

Sounds like some serious mics you have there Marko - very impressive.
