For something refreshingly different, check out the early avant-garde piano exploration album by Jordan De La Sierra called GYMNOSPHERE: SONG OF THE ROSE (recently reissued). He studied with (and became a good friend of) legendary minimalist pioneer Terry Riley, and also was a contemporary and friend of another exploratory pianist La Monte Young. These three spear-headed re-tuned piano music.

This album (on CD for the first time) was recorded in 1976 and became legendary for being one of the seminal acoustic-ambient recordings and for planting some of the early roots of new age and space music. The tracks are all long and exploratory and minimalistic and very much in the vein of modern-classical. This is De La Sierra experimenting with sound on an acoustic piano with the notes echoing with natural reverberation. Recommended for the adventurous.
