What classical music did you listen to today?

Colin, thank you so much for that idea. Do you have any suggestions regarding with which composers to start?

Well try Haydn's string qts and some of his Piano trios, same with Beethoven, Schubert,Brahms, Shostakovitch. then Violin sonatas and Piano sonatas should keep you going for a while :grin:

Camille Saint-Saens--Organ Symphony No.3 in C moll, Op.78 and Cypres et Lauriers for organ and orchestra, Op.156. Both works feature Matthias Eisenberg on organ. They are performed by the Orchestre Du Capitole De Toulose, conducted by Michel Plasson. They were recorded in 1995 and are on EMI Classics. I was very impressed and moved by the second and fourth movements of the first work when the organ comes in; it really adds a majestic quality to the overall mood set by the music.
Dmitri Shostakovich--Symphony No.7 in C, Op.60 {"Leningrad"} performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Bernard Haitnik. The first movement of this powerful work still blows me away each time I listen to it!

CT64,

Why "La Boheme"? Whats so interesting about a lissome young lady that is consumed by consumption(TB) and her liasons?:crazy::smirk::p

Gergiev conducting "La Forza Del Destino".

Last listened: Fête des Belles Eaux for six ondes martenot by Olivier Messiaen. Truly, "out of this world" music.

EDIT: Messiaen wrote this in 1938 for an open air festival with colored lights and fountains. A few years later, in a German POW camp, he would re-work the theme for 'cello and piano as part of his Quatuor pour la fin du temps, which is "other-worldly" music in its own right. ;)

At this point in my life, La bohème »might« be my favorite opera written by somebody not named Wagner!

I got that recording- and I think it's underappreciated.
Peter Tchaikovsky--Symphony No.4 in F Moll, Op.36, performed by the Berliner Philharmoniker conducted by Herbert von Karajan.
And I got that one, too.:)

And lately (combining the Chicago Symphony Orchestra with Wagner), I've most recently listened to Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg With Solti conducting- Ben Heppner as Walther, José van Dam as Hans Sachs.

His interpretation of the 2nd if one of the best IMHO

Hopefully, the timeless recording of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue by Leonard Bernstein & the Columbia Symphony Orchestra won't be too "downmarket" to rate a mention as my latest classical music listening.
