Joseph Haydn--Symphony No.6 in D Major, Symphony No.45 in F sharp minor, and Symphony No.48 in C Major. All three works are on a MUsical Heritage Society cd called "Great Haydn Symphonies." They are performed by the Austro-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra conducted by Adam Fischer. They were recorded in 1988 and 1989 in Eisenstadt, Austria.
Dmitri Shostakovich--Symphony No.7 in C Major, Op.60 {"Leningrad"}, performedbytheLondon Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Bernard Haitnik.
Peter Tchaikovsky--Symphony No.4 in F Moll, Op.36 and Symphony No.5 in E Moll, Op.64. Both pieces are performed by the Berliner Philharmoniker under the baton of Herbert von Karajan.
I find the second movement of Tchaikovsky's 4th Symphony to be especially evocative and haunting.

I think most slow (usually the 2nd) movements are beautiful or as you say haunting/evocative etc particularly when following a boisterous movement this is IMO very evident with Shostakovitch

Colin, I totally agree with your observation; however, I would like to add to our litany the 3rd movement of Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony {"Pathetique"} as being one of the most lyrical and moving ones I've yet to come across.

Sergei Rachmaninoff--Piano Concerto No.1 in F-sharp Minor, Op.1, Piano Concerto No.4 in G Moll, Op.40 and Rhapsody On A Theme Of Paganini. All three works are performed by the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra led by Leonard Slatkin. Abbey Simon is the featured pianist.
Dmitri Shostakovich--Symphony No.11 in G Moll, Op.103 {"The Year 1905"}. This piece is performed by the London Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Mstislav Rostropovich.

Once again, for me, one of the standout movements is the 2nd in Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto # 4.

Rach's 3rd - Just so much pianistic beauty - Of course the "Ossia Cadenza" of the first movement is an event in and of itself........Hearing Arcadi Volodos HyperUltraRomantic rendition of it proves to me that the 3rd separates the men from the boys and the women from the girls.
