Invisible City of Kitezh by Rimskii-Korsakov. Having recently made acquaintance with a woman who is related to the composer and her sharing very fascinating details about his life and musical works has gotten me fired up about him.

Gliere 3rd. Symph. aka "Ilya Muromets."

Having visited the small town of Murom on the banks of the River Oka last year I got a new appreciation for the Russian Folk Hero Ilya Muromets. There is a Monastery there where Ilya is interred. He was also canonised by the Russian Orthodox Church.

Antonin Dvorak--Symphony No.7 in D Moll, Op.70 and Symphony No.8 in G Major, Op.88. Both works are performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra led by Carlo Giulini.
Felix Mendelssohn--Violin Concerto in E moll, Op.64

Both of these works are performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Daniel Barenboim. Featured violinist is Izhak Perlman.
Serge Prokofiev--Symphony No.1 in D Major, Op.25 {"Classical"} and Symphony No.5 in B Flat Major, Op.100. Bothpieces are performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by James Levine.
Parts of the first and last movements in the 5th Symphony reminded me of Shostakovich.

J. Brahms - Cello sonatas as played by Rostrpovich/Serkin

I hear a strong resemblance between the 3rd movement of the F major sonata and the finale of the F major symphony.

Antonin Dvorak--Symphony No.9 in E Moll, Op.95 {"From the New World"}, performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Carlo Giulini.
Dmitri Shostakovich--Symphony No.7 in C Major, Op.60 {"Leningrad"}, performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra led by Bernard Haitnik. After repeated listenings to this work, I am only now beginning to appreciate just how melodic and haunting the third movement is; I also noticed that the third movement slides right into the fourth w/o any pause {unless I am mistaken, of course}.

Dmitri Shostakovich--Symphony No.11 in G Moll, Op.103 {"The Year 1905"}, performed by the London Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Mstislav Rostropovich. What a glorious first movement, as it steadily builds and ascends up the dynamic ladder!
Ludwig Van Beethoven--Symphony No.5 in C Moll, Op.67 and Symphony No.7 in A Major, Op.92. Both works are performed by the Vienna Philharmonic led by Carlos Kleiber. I can't get over the majestic quality of both works' second movements!

Both of these works are performed by the Boston Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Leonard Bernstein. It would turn out to be the last concert Mr.Bernstein would conduct before he unfortunately passed away.
Ludwig Van Beethoven--Symphony No.2 in D Major, Op.36 and Symphony No.7 in A Major, Op.92. Both pieces are performed by the New York Philharmonic led by Leonard Bernstein.
