Burning CDs.

LARS If this is in the wrong category please move.
I am having trouble burning CDs. I down load as flac then convert to wav and burn at low speed via“Ashampoo burning studio” I have been doing this for several years with no mishaps but now I am getting crackles on the burned CD (just a couple here and there) and suspect the DVD RW drive I have never cleaned or dusted it.
The wav files stored on PC play perfectly through the computer so it points to the drive. I am tempted to put a vacuum nozzle in the region of the open tray and see if that fixes it. I run a DELL desktop andVista Home.

Any suggestions?

Hi Colin,

Instead of a vacuum, I might suggest using a pressurized can of air instead. That will effectively dislodge any debris within the unit and not allow any moisture inside as well. If we just blow in there (with out mouths) we will add moisture to the interior which will be harmful down the way.

Those spray cans usually have a long nozzle to attache which lets it get inside the unit easily.

Thanks Mike and Lars I have wondered about those cleaners and they are available for just a few dollars.

A can of compressed air also sounds a good idea, my eye sight is so bad now I just dare not try to take the case of the PC.

At least once a year I also remove the side cover from my PC and lightly vacuum out its interior (with the system shut down first); especially the four fans inside (mainframe, power supply, video card, and back panel).

I checked the price of Air Cans in NZ and over $70 from specialist dealers, I am going to give the vacuum idea a try and also get a brush CD next time I am in town they are very cheap.

$70? Whoa ... the cans I get here are generally in electronic supply houses (stores) where computer stuff (PC's, cables etc) are sold. Here they are relatively cheap, maybe a couple dollars a can.

I have now found much cheaper ones from approx NZ$31 down to $13-14 if you buy 2, I do wonder why the difference could be the quality of the air??

I would guess the brand name verses an off brand..is the usual rule here it seems..and with my limited retirement benefit hardly can buy name brand anything.

. . . and with my limited retirement benefit hardly can buy name brand anything.

Same here, except for drugs on the Medicare plans where the brand names are becoming cheaper than the generics. But that is another topic.

Still the prices in NZ seem to be awfully high for those cans. In my old organ repair days, we used a one dollar bill for cleaning key contacts - cheaper than buying liquid cleaner and q-tips.

Amazon won't deliver those to NZ the same with batteries.

More likely because Royal mail and some other mail providers will not accept certain items they class as hazardous, includes things like spray cans, batteries, some paints; nanny strikes again.

As far as I know Mike has is right I have not bothered to find out.

I can get batteries in ok from "Battery Junction" a US on line store so some of it must be due to Amazon's policy

At last it is fixed I purchased a cleaning disc but no improvement, installed a couple of new free burning suits which got rid of the crackles but would not play on my new player so to get to the point I have been using TDK disc's for a long time with no problems and all of my recent efforts have been on TDK so in desperation I purchased a pack of Verbatim and "ding dong" all fixed the TDK must have deteriorated.
