White Sun - White Sun - CD Review

WHITE SUN is a new world-fusion group from the United States that has traveled worldwide singing mantras (rather than chanting them), and when their first album was released recently, it went to #1 on the iTunes World Music Sales Chart in less than 12 hours.

The first and last tunes are a capella, and most of the others have a gorgeous female lead vocal (sometimes singing counterpoint with herself) plus keyboards, the Indian tabla drum, real strings and the occasional guitar. Two tunes are just the song of a resonating, reverberating gong, sending sound shimmers out like a beacon, and played by yogi master Harijiwan, who is known worldwide as a top yoga instructor. The singer is Gurujas who also plays a lot harmonium, a pedal-pump air-flow keyboard that has been popular in India for the past 150 years. There is no sitar or other stringed instrument from India, but they do have a red hot tabla player, Abhiman Kaushal, who has played with Ravi Shankar and Ustad Zakir Hussain. The guitarist (and producer), Adam Berry, has spent recent years creating soundtrack music for animated TV shows such as as “South Park,” “Monsters vs Aliens,” “The Penguins of Madagascar,” “Buzz Lightyear: Star Command,” “Hercules” (the animated series), “Kim Possible” and many others.

White Sun has created a stunning debut recording that has wide-spread appeal (rare in this genre). They may very well have turned mantra singing on its head and come up with something for the masses of the world to enjoy.
