Confidence Issues Ruining My Playing

Hi,
I play the guitar and the piano, with 10 years of experience. I play both quite well, at least at an intermediate level. I haven't really played that much infront of other people though, and whenever I do my confidence shuts down and I get extremely tense and can't play anywhere near as well as I know I can. I can perform in front of a crowd of people, but not infant of people I know or when it's more intimate. This leads people to thinking I can't play (unless I send recordings to my friends). I really need to get over this, and I'm wondering if anyone else has any similar experience? It really hinders my music education and my growth as a musician. Any advice will be grateful,
Thanks
Josh

to me this falls under the practice rule..... the more you do perform infront of others the easier it will get. I remember at one point with concert work or big celebration services at church my left leg would start shaking... stretching and deep breaths help relax before you begin. another perhaps help is a mental one: one teacher said to me "always play the best for yourself first and let the others listen....not trying to impress them first..play like they are not even there"..... actually it does help. play more infront of others..maybe even use Skype or other messenger and play for people wtihout them beng physically present. GOOD LUCK

Even the best of professional performers have gotten jittery right before a public performance. When I present an organ concert, I always begin with a piece that is very familiar to me.

The more you are able to perform in front of others, the better your confidence will be. It takes time ... so be patient. Before a concert I gather myself in a very dark room, sit quietly and eat a couple bananas. Bananas contain potassium which helps alleviate leg cramps.
