Recently, I came across an online learning site that has a lot of musical instruments learning courses like guitar, violin, sitar, kanjira, piano and vocal music. The website has agreement with some of the famous musical artists who teach each course with private and live online video chats. Interested people have the option to register for a demo class online. Now, I want to learn how to learn tabla online. My question is should I learn tabla online by signing up directly for the entire course , or should I first register for a demo class? The website’s name is www.ipassio.com . Should I trust this e-learning site?

Everything I learned about playing the piano and organ (classical) was done through private lessons ... 14 years in total of private one-on-one instruction.

I firmly believe that one cannot possibly learn everything there is to know about playing technique and proper fingering over the internet (online). How is the online teacher going to show you, by physically moving your finger or wrist, to the proper position on the fret of a guitar? How is the online teacher going to be able to physically place your hand in the proper playing position for bowing the violin?

We cannot advise on what you may or may not get out of a course with this online site ... you might opt for the demo class at first. Seriously think about what you have learned and what you expect to do with your new skills. If you are at all considering turning pro (that is playing for profit as in a job or gig) then you should really invest in one-on-one human private lessons.

Hear hear. I cannot imagine learning an instrument without another player (at least) and preferably a qualified music teacher physically present to listen and advise.
