• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

In order to post a new topic - or reply to existing ones - you may join and become a member by clicking on Register New User. It's completely free and only requires a working email address (in order to confirm your registration - it will never be given away!). We strive to make this a friendly and informative forum for anyone interested in pipe organs and organ music.

Hi,

Who knows about a 4 DVD set titled A History of the Organ?
It is only available via yesasia.com but they ship only in the USA and Canada.
Is there anybody who has this set and can share it?
Many thanks in advance!

From the few extracts available at Youtube, I can see that it's in fact the old French miniseries by Gilles Cantagrel - I saw it on television when it first came out, and it's definitely a must have!

Unfortunately, yesasia lists it as out of stock...:(

That means that they are encoded for Region 6 (China), whereas you'd need Region 2 for France.

Too bad, really. Especially since DVD producers don't have to region-encode their DVDs: I've got a few organ documentaries that are "Region 0", i.e. playable from the whole world.

Hi berthon,

Do you actually have the 4 DVD set "History of the pipe organ" ???
if so, there is no need for you to purchase them again, they can easily be copied to a PC and made region free so they can be played in any country. How about making some copies (since they are not even available to most of us) ???

Have you tried playing them on your PC's (or Mac) DVD player? For this you need to use VLC player (or a similar program, but VLC is free), as it ignores all region coding on the disc.
You can find VLC at http://www.videolan.org/vlc/.

Jim - welcome to the illustrious MIMF where everyday is a treat.

Annoyingly, i can't identify that music...but did you notice the bird's yelling their heads (in the distance) off just before the music starts?

The music at the start is really nice - it would be good to know what it is.
Then it goes into one of my favourite Bach pieces - Sleepers Wake.
Wonderful!

I have the set and used a "hack" for my phillips dvd player to make it region free. I also used DVDShrink v3.2 to make a copy for back-up, it will make the videos region free and burn the discs. If you need a copy of the program and an instruction set for it, send me a pm.

A new edition of this set is underway at Arthaus Musik. So far, they have published volume 1 and volume 2.

The audio comments are available in English, French, and German. I hope that the French audio consists of the original comments by Gilles Cantagrel (the author of the documentary, back in 1980). The Chinese edition only had audio comments in Chinese and English (i.e. not the original Cantagrel comments).
