Best hometown band?

This could be difficult if you live in a no-horse town where the nearest thing to Rock and Roll is Ethel's Electric Spoon Band, but which band (or person) is the best known to come from your home town? If there's nobody then your region and if it's that bad, just your country (I note that Frederik is Danish!!)

I'm from Coventry and the most well-known band would probably be the Specials, of Ghost Town and Free Nelson Mandela fame.

I'm from Accrington in the North West of England and I think our most famous musician is Jon Anderson of "Yes" and "Jon and Vangelis" fame. My mum claims to know him but I am not too sure about that.

Another famous Coventry export is Hazel O'Connor.

Well, on a Prog-Rock forum, I think that Jon Anderson wins, unless somebody is from Perivale (Rick Wakeman) or Dunfermline (Ian Anderson), of course.

And I thought me going to school with Karl Shale from the Colourfield would do it: how wrong could I be?

I think the only famous musician to come from my home town (High Wycombe) is Howard Jones of "What is love?" and "Pearl in the Shell" fame - which were quite big hits in the 1980s. He certainly wasn't prog rock though.

I remember Howard Jones, he had the big blond hair, didn't he? I used to work with Howard Jones... only it's a different Howard Jones.

Doesn't Colin Baker, the sixth Doctor Who live in High Wycombe as well?

Hazel O Connor is from Coventry, so was The Selector, King, Colourfield, Funboy Three, The Primatives and Panjabi MC. Ooops... nearly forgot Vince Hill.

Yes Howard Jones had big blonde 1980s style hair and I believe he is on tour. Colin Baker is indeed from High Wycombe. There are quite a few celebrities who are not actually from the town but live close by (it is convenient for London).

Mel B (of the Spice Girls) used to live a couple of miles away, and Jay Kay has a big house and car collection not too far away.

Well I'm from Portsmouth - hence the name. The most famous act to come from Portsmouth is the Portsmouth Sinfonia, the worst orchestra on the planet. They are so awful that they managed to play the Royal Albert Hall based on irony-mongers just loving them.

However, Joe Jackson did live in Portsmouth for a good deal of time so we'll take him - he was brilliant.

Now Joe Jackson is class. A sort of Elvis Costello with no hair or glasses. He was a pretty good piano player if I remember rightly. Some of the songs on 'Night and Day' were just a different class from other stuff from that time.
