I got told off by somebody on a website for calling the Arctic Monkeys a 'Pop' band. Their album got to number 1 by selling half a million copies in a week. He claimed that they were 'Indie'.

'Pop' is short for Popular;
'Indie' is short for Independent

The Arctic Monkeys are on Domino Records, an independent label, and so are both Indie and Pop.

Kylie Minogue was on PWL Records, an independent label, and so is both Indie and Pop.

People misunderstand these terms and use them in the wrong way.

What you are doing is taking the original meaning of something and applying in a time when the definition has changed. 'Indie' now refers to a sort of post-punk rock band that doesn't overdo the musicianship but prefers to focus on the songs without turning into pseudo-folkies.

'Pop' refers to pre-packaged puppets of large corporation whose only job is to front jangly songs written by faceless corporate monkeys.

Those are the definitions as described in the latest edition of the Oxford English Dictionary.

Kylie has been a bit of a chameleon over the years in the type of music she has released.

I remember she had an "Indie" period in both senses of the definition. She had the hit "Where the Wild Roses Grow" with Nick Cave, during that period.

I take it that you are joking Pompey, but I know where you are coming from. I have just checked the Oxford English Dictionary and the actual defintions are:

indie: adj. (of a pop group or record label) not belonging or affiliated to a major record company.
n. 1 a pop group or record label of this type.

pop: n. (also pop music) commercial popular music, in particular accessible, tuneful music of a kind popular since the 1950s.
adj. relating to pop music.

I like your versions though.

Are you really using the Oxford English Dictionary as your guide to what's going down on the streets? OK, I accept you definitions as legally correct but mine are correct, spiritually.
