Yesterday (June 1) started off sunny with temperatures in the low 90's (F) but started to cloud up by noon. By 15:00 we commenced a period of heavy rains and high winds which turned into a series of Tornadoes over the four counties which comprise the Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts which lasted until about 21:00 hours. When it was over there was extensive damage over the area, trees uprooted, buildings collapsed or damaged, autos destroyed and a reported four fatalities. One fine old church had its steeple blown down, a 16 wheel refrigerated truck was blown over on its side, and on it goes. In the immediate area where we live we had only the heavy rain and wind, but an area about 1 and 1/2 miles from us received extensive damage to homes and a fairly new school. We were just lucky it was not worse. Today is again sunny although cooler (low 70's predicted.
