Help needed - To find...

Hi guys,

I'm working on a small film that focuses on all the crap going on in the world today, ie. War, climate change, disease, poverty.. etc.

I need a theme song... a song which somehow depicts all of that, although preferrably without singing. I don't feel there are words to describe whats going on. So far, the closest I've found to what I want is Pink Floyd style.

I might actually use one of their songs... theres a few I got in mind, just can't remember the names. But basically that type of thing... Anger, Depressing, "end times", perhaps a glimpse of hope... all need to be felt while listening to the song.

All help appreciated.

Hello Navieko,

You may get a wide range of suggestions on this question. One piece the media forever seems to play when "crap" is going on is the Barber Adagio for Strings. For something surreal, you could try various works by Ligeti.

However, whether it's either of those ideas or Pink Floyd, be careful -- all these works are under copyright, and if you're planning to distribute the film or display it in a "public" venue, you'll need permission...either a performance rights license or possibly a synchronization license, depending on where and how often you're planning to show the film. Disclaimer: I'm not a copyright lawyer, so I'm sure others here can give you better information. But watch out when using recent music. Copyright law is complex, and the fines can be stiff if somebody see your movie and decides you're not playing by the rules.

Well, I'm not sure what kind of music would go along with your crap, as there's many forms of crap. One song that does come to my mind though is from the movie 'Crash'. I'll need to look up the song because I don't remember the artist or song name, but it was the song that was playing during the scene where the middle eastern father loads his gun to go to shoot the hispanic guy. It's all musical, no singing and it's really beautiful in a haunting sort of way.

I know the track you mean, would suit this sort of project well, though you'd do well to get rights to use it I would imagine since it may well have been composed specifically for the movie.

On a sidenote, Crash is definitely well worth a watch - I was a little surprised given that it didn't grab my attention when it first came out but after renting it to see wha all the fuss was about, I soon saw why. Great film.
