    Hello to the forum

    Hello everyone,

I am very happy to have found this forum. It has one of the best-looking skins I have ever seen on a message board -- my compliments to Frederik and the staff. The welcome message suggested an introduction post, so here it is.

By profession I am an astronomer living in Arizona, USA, and that's how I found this forum, by Googling "classical music forum" while up ridiculously late and trying to stay awake while observing at the telescope. It looks like a great community.

When not doing astronomy, my main love is music. My primary instrument is pipe organ (another reason this forum is kind of appealing), but I play piano and harpsichord as well. I started at age 10 with Scott Joplin and I still love ragtime, but I have since enjoyed everything from Palestrina to Steve Reich. I've written a bunch of original ragtime, and lately I've been working mainly on making synthesizer realizations of everything from Bach to Joplin to my own compositions with my home studio.

So, everything around here from the general forums, to the organ forum, to the science forum looks great! I'm looking forward to "meeting" you and talking music with you, and I'll fill out my profile a bit soon.

    Best regards,

    Jeff

    hello to Flagstaff Az

I really miss that part of the country. Flagstaff is one of my favorite cities. I lived seasonally in Yarnell (just south of Prescott) for 5 years and the mountains of Arizona are the best.
Harv who now resides in the Philippines and the only thing close to Flagstaff is Baguio at 6000 feet where the Cathedral has the only pipe organ in that whole area.

    Hi there Jeff

Have fun here! Seems you already have things in common with the folks here...

''The greatest education in the world is watching the masters at work.'' - Michael Jackson

Thank you all for the warm welcome!

hsmoller: Yarnell/Prescott! Been through there several times. I have never been to the Philippines, but I imagine the climate (not to mention the elevation) being a bit different from northern AZ. I'll look forward to talking with you here.

Frederik: Indeed, the relevance of the topics to my interests is quite something! I think I will enjoy it here. Most appealingly, it seems like a very civil forum -- something all too lacking on many Web 2 locations.

krummhorn: Tucson! Wonderful. I greatly enjoy visiting there. We spent a lovely few days there in March last year taking our boys to the Desert Museum and the Air & Space Museum. I've done quite a few nights of observing at Kitt Peak too. I love Flagstaff, but the basin and range country of southern AZ is incredibly beautiful. Looking forward to getting to know you.

roko: Thanks...yes, I feel right at home already.

I'm glad you feel that way about the forum, Jeff. The wonderful thing is that we very rarely have to moderate any threads on the base of them not being "civil". I can hardly remember the last time a discussion turned ugly or personal, but of course as the forum continues to grow there will inevitably be heated discussions from time to time, and sometimes they may become a little too heated.

With that said I have a good feeling that the overall civil tone is here to stay. It really is a must on a forum like this. People from all over the world - with different cultural traditions, political views, religions, ethnic origins, etc. etc. come here, but sharing a love for music one way or another even if their musical tastes varies wildly. And that's the point; bringing people from all over the world and with different musical backgrounds or interests together. Long ramble short... there's no way that can be done successfully without a general tone of civility and mutual respect for ones differences members in between.

    Best regards
    Frederik
