• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

In order to post a new topic - or reply to existing ones - you may join and become a member by clicking on Register New User. It's completely free and only requires a working email address (in order to confirm your registration - it will never be given away!). We strive to make this a friendly and informative forum for anyone interested in pipe organs and organ music.

Pentecost music, anyone?

Hi all,

I just got home from playing at choir practice, and I was just wondering if anybody wants to share what you're serving up for Pentecost on Sunday.

For my prelude, we have a really talented 14-year-old trumpeter in our parish, and he and I are doing a Telemann suite that has a soulful Largo (and our young brass player's sense of phrasing in the long lines is just to die for) and a sprightly gigue. For the postlude, I'm playing Bach's Komm, Gott Schopfer, Heiliger Geist (BWV 667) from the Eighteen.

Finally, our choir director is retiring this Sunday after 25 years at the helm, and she's going out the with Britten Festival Te Deum. The middle section is fun writing for organ, and the final pages (over "Vouchsafe, O Lord...") are truly gorgeous...goose bumps all the way! I've never listened to a whole lot of Britten, but I think I need to explore his works further. It was really clicking at practice tonight, and it's a beautiful piece. I know I'm going to have it running through my head continuously for the next four days! :)

I'm also doing Komm, Gott Schopfer, Heiliger Geist for a postlude. When I first heard a recording of this work (eons ago) I knew right then and there that SOMEDAY I wanted to be able to play that. I'd listen to it over and over again, mesmerized by the other-worldy sounds and harmonies. After some research on where in the world to even FIND the music of Bach, I found one of those large Dover books in a local bookstore that included this piece. This was the first serious piece of classical music that I ever learned, and to this day, remains one of my absolute favorites. In fact, just last night I played through it three times! The Holy Spirit at work? This piece is very possibly responsible for my being a church organist/music director today!

Hi Jeff ...

I'm doing the BWV 667 for Prelude ... preceeded by the chorale to stretch the presentation time a little. It's my standard prelude every year (except in 1992 when I played it as the postlude at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome). The choir anthem is Creator Spirit, Heavenly Dove with choir, handbells and organ. For the postlude, I'll do Komm Gott Schöpfer, heiliger Geist by Pachelbel.

Don't forget to wear RED this Sunday

Wow, 667 seems to be popular at this time of year :)

Great story, Royboy! It surely is a beautiful piece. Kh, the relative brevity is why I usually use it as a postlude...I agree, as a prelude, I'd probably add the chorale or another piece to round things out.

I honestly Must be dumb, how the hell do you start a thread? A new thread?
Have any of you organ folks ever played on the little Bamboo Pipe organ of Las Pinas, in the Philippines? I was very fortunate to be able to play on it some 20 years ago it was a fantastic experience.

Vowles Tracker,

Log in, and go to the main page of the forum. Click on one of the boards to see the list of threads. At the top left of the list, above the first thread, will be a button "New Thread". Click it to start a new thread. When you're browsing existing threads, you just get the reply button, so I can see how that might be a little confusing.
