Have you seen the film on Edith Piaf? If not, please do - it's a wonderful tribute which handles very sensitively the many tragedies of this great artist's life. I remember once hearing Charles Aznavour speak of her influence. Two wonderful singers who allow the songs to sell themselves and this world is a much better place for them naving been a part of it.

Piaf songs I adore : Mon Dieu and Hymne a l'amore - especially Mon Dieu. i seem to remember reading once that Marguerite Monnot was a student of Cortot. Yes/no??

Sorrow doesn't really figure for me in music - even though things can be overwhelmingly sad. I hear it all as being just beautiful and poetic.

Goodness, yes. Mon Dieu is just heart-rending – the epitome of how Piaf just bared her soul in her music.

And as for Je ne regrette rien, I intend that to be played at my funeral and I intend to make absolutely sure that it's true.

I think a lot of the heart-rending threads in Mon Dieu has to do with the actual angst of vocal line against the descending choral accompaniment - or something there-a-bouts. Nureyev once said you must spray everything you do with your blood - I think Piaf did this in her singing - as you say, she bared her soul. Still, artists aren't necessarily their work and they can consciously "will" things also. Regrets? I have none either - today is yesterday's tomorrow - we are all part of some bigger picture and thank God Piaf has been a part of ours!

I hope you enjoy it! Have you seen the recent film on Piaf's life? Take some tissues with you if you haven't!

I finally saw this a few weeks ago – absolutely superb. The final scenes of her on stage are incredible. The music, of course, is wonderful and Marion Cotillard really deserves an Oscar.
