I really enjoy their tune, Birdland. The playing is great; I especially like Jaco Pastorius on bass. What do you figure is their second best known tune?

Hi rojo

I found you entry on Weather Report. A soft spot with me. The awesome Weather Report and in particular the greatest el. bass/el. fretless bass player Jaco Pastorius known to most of us. He also left this world much to early.

Second best tune - assuming Birdland is the best (LOL) - "Black Market" (1) or "Cannon Ball" (2) from the album Black Market. Two very different tunes. At the time Zawinul and Shorter did not really know which drummer they would keep. Both Narada Michael Walden (exe Mahavishnu Orchestra) and Chester Thompson - a drummers drummer (like with Genesis substituting Phil Collins) were in the band.

Also one of the former el. bassists Alphonzo Johnson from "Tale Spinnin" was in the band. I believe the "Black Market" -album from Columbia Jazz 1976 and the title song, still decades later runs down my spine, whenever listening to it.

Jaco and Bireli Lagrene recorded together as well on "Stuttgart Aria" feat. Vladislaw Sendeckl (keyboards, synthezisers) Jan Jankeje ( bass syntheziser, vocals) and Peter Lubke (drums), JazzPoint Records 1986.

On "Live in Italy", JazzPoint Records 1986 Jaco and Bireli had the drummer Thomas Borocz in the trio. Great album as well.

Be well sir.

Best regards,

Ha, finally someone responds to this thread! :) And it only took about 6 months. You should get a prize.

Thanks for all that, intet-at-tabe. May I call you intet for short?

Yup; I remember investigating some of Pastorius's work at one point, and was very impressed. I seem to have a bit of a weakness for great bass playing, and great bass lines. Not sure why. Although I guess I enjoy any instrument when it's played well.

Will look around for your suggestions asap.

PS I'm female. But don't tell anyone. Just kidding! (About the telling people part. I'm not kidding about being female.)

intet (only to get in there with you)

Sorry, no prize. Just kudos from me, I'm afraid. :smirk:

Just checked out WR's Black Market and Cannon Ball. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Also found Teen Town with Pastorius and Lagrene. Very cool and fun.

Then I actually watched (and listened to) the whole instructional series Pastorius did; Modern Electric Bass. I'd read somewhere that by then, his chops weren't what they used to be. Well, that may or may not be true; in any case, it was still pretty out of this world, imo.

Mam (leaning forward in honor ;):tiphat: as they do in high places on the polished floors).

Unfortunately Jaco Pastorius had a disability like so many other great musicians in rock/jazz/blues - He used drugs and alcohol like ordinary people would breath air, which in the end took his life away on a bar in Texas, USA.

But no one will deny his incredible talents on the bass. You might say he changed what was possible on the electric bass. He was the first, to the best of my knowledge, to play the fretless electric bass, like a former Pat Metheny Group bassist Mark Egan has carried on. JP like John Coltrane made school for thousands of bassists to come around the world. One of his best albums in his own name IMHO is "Word of Mouth" including a guy playing on former oil barrels. Personally he had Toots Thielemanss as a favourite harmonica player and guitarist.

Leaving the room going backwards out :tiphat:.

Best regards,
intet

rojo,

Have you listen to Jaco Pastorius´ double CD album "Punk Jazz"?

If not, you should give yourself the chance. It´s a sort of journey from the beginning prior to his time with Weather Report.

I don't know much weather report other than the obvious Birdland and I loved that when I first heard it many years ago.

NEB, you should realy try it out, also Jaco on his various albums. Such an incredible talent, who was the first one to play the fretless el. bass.

Weather Report and the song Birdland. I agree with you, it´s an awesome tune, which you´ll keep in your head for months after listening to it, so easy to whistle.

My favourite version of Birdland comes from Manhatten Transfer though. They were awesome too.

Hi back to you NEB ;)

Right on the money NEB!! Manhatten Tranfer a great american group of 4 singers two of each gender. Actually they did a song on one of WR´s albums. I would say majesticly and most convincingly - the best song on this album titled "Procession" from 1984. The song is called "Where The Moon Goes".:cool:

Beside the two leaders Zawinul and Shorter, the new WR had new memebers: Victor Bayley (el. bass, bass sytheziser), Omar Hakim (drums) and Jose Rossy (percussion) and the Manhatten Tranfer on this one song.

Hi Intet,

I'll put it on my 'to listen to' list (including the other artists you mentioned,) which is turning out to be endless.

There's so much stuff I want to hear! :)

(I quite like Manhattan Transfer as well.)

Very good of you to enter it on the endless "to listen to" list. I am already somewhat different from most of you talented guys, but about jazz and jazz musicians, I feel prety well in to and this is here I humbly and respectfully can participate in the MIMF + on various other threads.

I have just ordered Sir Frederik´s album from Lethland playing with an orchestra there. Don´t know if I dig it, but one can´t say until one actually have listened to it. You guys are incredible completely above my reach, but I feel welcome here, with what I know best - Jazz.

You have a great day now rojo ;):):cool::grin:

Yeah - I'm gonna have to dig out my M - T records and play them or even digitally re-master them when I get some gear to do it with. now that is almost worth spending the money just for them!

NEB - Talking about the vocal group The Manhatten Transfer. What happened to this group? I haven´t heard much about them since the 1980`s. Did they break up for a solo career each of them? Or perhaps one or two of them left for other commitments?

If you know anything at all, please let me know!!

i like the first records of weather report for their funky feel, and real improvisations.
by the way i found in some cd box set that the drummer on "sweet nighter", Eric Gravatt i think it is, was carlos santana favorite WR drummer of all. since i like santana's ideas about music ( as far as i listen to his album up to 1975 only ), i quite agree.

anyone know about that drummer in particular?

and another question: does anyone know how Sam and Dave come to sing for Jaco?

sir sunwaiter :tiphat::clap::trp::banana::lol::lol::lol::lol:

I agree with you. It does seem we have both Pink Floyd, Turyia Alice Coltrane, Santana, Jaco and Weather Report in common. GREAT MAN!!

Here´s a link for Eric Kamau Gravatt:

http://www.drummerworld.com/drummers/Eric_Kamau_Gravatt.html

I have to check some older files of mine to find something about Sam Moore & Dave Prater, though I do seem to remember that one of Jaco´s first jobs was with these two vocalists.

"I´ll be back", quote Arnold Schwarzenegger - One of these days :clap::clap::clap: I saw your entry on this quote and song from Pink Floyd (the album "Meddle"), for more on Jaco and Sam & Dave.

Below you see the front cover of Jaco´s first solo album from 1976, simply entitled "Jaco Pastorius" (his real name was John Francis Pastorius III, born on 12.01.1951 in Norristown. Pennsylvania, USA) . On this album, you will find the Sam & Dave hit single song "Come on, Come Over" (style of music: R & B) in celebration of R & B and Sam Moore & Dave Prater.

Jaco would have been 57 today, where I am still but a lad at 54 (lols).

wow more and more infos!! thx intet-at-tabe. Gravatt has an awesome beard now :)

and i'm happy to find a note by terry bozzio, who was a great discovery for me as i watched frank zappa's baby snakes video. he had that mixed glow of fun, impressive technique ability, theatrical presence that suited zappa's repertoire and most of all an obvious and justifiable childish, showing-off attitude that adds something to the show.
