• Welcome to the Pipe Organ Forum! This is a part of the open community Magle International Music Forums focused on pipe organs (also known as "church organs"), organists, organ music and related topics.

This forum is intended to be a friendly place where technically advanced organists and beginners (or even non-organists) can feel comfortable having discussions and asking questions. We learn by reading and asking questions, and it is hoped that the beginners (or non-organists) will feel free to ask even the simplest questions, and that the more advanced organists will patiently answer these questions. On the other hand, we encourage complex, technical discussions of technique, music, organ-building, etc. The opinions and observations of a diverse group of people from around the world should prove to be interesting and stimulating to all of us.

As pipe organ discussions can sometimes become lively, it should be pointed out that this is an open forum. Statements made here are the opinion of the poster, and not necessarily that of the forum itself, its administrator, or its moderators.

In order to post a new topic - or reply to existing ones - you may join and become a member by clicking on Register New User. It's completely free and only requires a working email address (in order to confirm your registration - it will never be given away!). We strive to make this a friendly and informative forum for anyone interested in pipe organs and organ music.

Practicing more... and enjoying it!

Hello, friends...

I've been gone from these parts for quite some time, as I was in the process of interviewing for a new position. I'm happy to report that I've finished that process, and that we're safely moved across the country to Madison, WI, where I'm now working at Asbury United Methodist Church.

With this position, I've gained a lot more time to practice, and so have been trying to learn more music and play things I've never tried before. My 2 latest to learn have been René Blin's Rosace and Randy Runyon's Aria - both lovely, lush pieces (albeit the Rosace is quite a bit more of a finger-twister!)

I hope to post more frequently now that I'm getting settled in my new post.

Best to all,

- G

Hi Giwro,

It's indeed nice to see you back again. Happy to hear about your new position and hope all goes well for you there.

Randy Runyon's Aria is indeed one of my favorites - whenever I use it in the church service, it always gets such wonderful comments. I haven't yet looked at Rosace - I'll have to investigate that one.

Salutations Giwro,

Hurray for Giwro - Lets hear it for the man of the moment - Hip Hip, Hurray - Hip Hip Hurray, Hip Hip, Hurray!!!

Congrats dear sir for achieving your new office. So, you're up on Madtown, eh? Just in time for the winter too - Brrrrrrrrr!!!;):smirk:

I hope you have a decent organ where you now play. Is it a three or four manual? Skinner, Moller, Austin, Beckerath, Wicks, or something in the digital vein? 50 stops or more?

Just curious,

Corno Dolce

Btw - I really liked the *Rosace* and the *Aria* - They're way cool :cool::cool:

Thanks for the kind words!

I'm enjoying things here so far...

Glad you like the Runyon Aria - you should indeed have a look at Rosace (although best of luck finding a copy - it's long out of print... PM me if you have any trouble and I can probably direct you :p)

Cheers,

Thanks for the effusive welcome....

Madtown is quite the neat place - I am surely not anticipating winter with any joy, but we'll survive, I expect.

I gave up a nice 2m 32rk Schantz (married to a 2000 Rodgers digital console for about 70 equivalent total ranks) I gained a 3m Alien... errmm ALLEN digital, about 70 or so stops. The organ is certainly not as nice sound-quality-wise, but the nicer acoustic makes up for it, as does the 3rd manual... it is so much easier to do the French stuff with 3m instead of 2 (!).

Glad you liked the clips - I can always post more if there is interest.

Cheers,

- G

Hi Giwro,

After hearing the Rosace and Aria I had a gut feeling that you will post really cool clips. They give me some ideas for increasing repertoire. Hey, if you have others you deem noteworthy, please feel free to share. Ohhh, an Allen digital is what you've gained. Well, it could have been worse - you could have been stuck with an Eminee. Seriously, an Allen is, imo, a pragmatists instrument. It'll passably render the French stuff and Reger without really spellbinding one.

Yes, the Allen really is not so bad - I'm learning to accept it on its own terms and play to the strengths instead of whining about the shortcomings LOL ;)

I'll gladly share more clips if y'all really want to hear them... perhaps in another thread so they don't get lost. <chuckle>

Hi Giwro,

Y'all? That sounds like a contraction from the great State of Texas :)

Ever get the feeling that when you're away from the console for too long you begin to feel bad? I know I do. Its a labor of love to practice but its also alot of fun to bring out certain passages by using a different stop or combination of stops.

I like playing the Lemare organ transcriptions of Wagner's music. Depending on ones imagination, one can really *color* those works in different hues. If one has access to the orchestral scores, it can be fun to discover what orchestral instruments Wagner used for a specific passage, at what dynamic and tempo, among others.

Cheers,

Corno Dolce

Thanks nachoBA...

I remember you from IMSLP and lots of nice uploads... pity that site is down.

Giwro,
You are right, we can say that we are almost friends. I remember you from IMSLP, Pianophilia, and also bought from you the Schanz organ ;), so we tend to share the same interests haha.
take care
