Opus number in arrangements?

Rachmaninoff

New member
I'm writing an arrangement to a popular folk melody. Should I assign an opus number to this arrangement? Also, if I write two different arrangements, say, one to full orchestra and other to flute and piano, should I assign one opus number to each arrangement?

One more question: am I right in assigning opus numbers to the stuff I compose? Is there any rule other than chronological order?

Thanks.

Hi Rachmaninoff,

Seeing as how the word "opus" is Latin for "work", I would tend to believe that it would be acceptable to assign an opus number for each work you publish. Sometimes for unpublished pieces a "Wo0" numbers from the German 'work without opus number'.

Hi Krummhorn,

Oh it makes sense, opus numbers only to original works. That's how the things look like, taking a look at the repertoire. Thanks.
