Just got hold of two DVDs. The original BLADE RUNNER with the voice over. Previously only available on VHS. I already have the Ultimate Directors Cut (final issue, number 8). Also a copy of the original APOCALYPSE NOW, in my opinion superior to the redux version, which had some scenes which seemed highly unlikely and made the film rather improbable. Also the new version of THE SWEENEY starring Ray Winston which I will report back on.

On Netflix {Blu-ray}, The Panic in Needle Park, starring Kitty Wynn, Al Pacino and Raul Julia. For a depiction of NYC at its grittiest--back in the "rough and tumble" seventies--one would be hard pressed indeed to find a better chronicle.

The Conversation, with Cindy Williams, Robert Duvall, Gene Hackman, John Cazale and Harrison Ford. In addition to this being a stellar cast in a very well made story with a big twist at its end, the jazz used as background is fantastic as well. I love the scenes--especially the close--of Hackman playing solo sax in the apartment he himself has completely demolished. Great stuff; too bad movies aren't made like this anymore!

On Netflix, Arlington Road, with Jeff Bridges, Tim Robbins and Joan Cusack. Excellent movie about home grown American terrorism, made in the aftermath of Oklahoma City and before 9-11. It recalls the old adage about not judging a book by its cover.

Smiley's People, {1982 tv mini-series, Episodes 1 and 2}, starring the inimitable Alec Guinness. This is Disc One of a three disc series. I am still amazed at how good an actor Alec Guinness was. I can't wait to acquire the other two discs from Netflix.

Just treated myself to Tinker Taylor and the follow up Smileys People A set from Amazon at just over £7.00. for the pair. First watched it on television many years ago. It made such a strong impression on my I can not even think about watching the new film version. The same is also true of Brideshead Revisited which I have the whole series of. Another brilliant production.
Excellent viewing.

Absolutely, Ted. I remember seeing both Le Carre series some time ago on television, and they remain imbedded in my memory still.
Alec Guinness is simply an amazing actor, and the whole BBC production standards and quality are second to none.

Hi, Teddy. I realize now that I should have begun with Tinker, Tailor and then gone on to Smiley's People, so I'll actually be seeing them in reverse order of when they were made. :shake: Oh, well!

Smileys is definitely a follow up. The interview with Karla and the business with the cigarette lighter in Tnker Taylor help[ set things up. Also the unearthing of the mole at the Circus is part of the reason for Karlas defection. But they are so enjoyable to watch that seeing them in reverse order wil mearly make you say "Aha" when you do watch Tinker.

Went to see Les Miserables last night. My first visit to the cinema for about two years. Specially offer on Thursdays of £2.50.
Quite a film and at two hours and forty minutes a bit of a marathon, but worth the numb bum. It has been criticised for the quality of the singing, as it featured actors rather than trained singers, but for me that added to it.
